DVD Reviews of Gary Moore & The Midnight Blues - Live at Montreux 1990

DVD Review: captured live at the beginning of Gary Moore's blues journey . . .
Summary: 4 Stars

A versatile musician, Irish guitarist Gary Moore has had a long career, notably as a member of the pioneering hard rock band Thin Lizzy. Then later as a solo artist in the 80's, Moore was a fret-blazing heavy metal guitar hero, before turning to the blues, with a string of blues based recordings, beginning with Still Got The Blues in 1990.

Live At Montreux captures Moore in a performance in Switzerland, in July of 1990. Moore had made the switch to the blues, and backed by the Midnight Blues Band, featuring a four piece horn section, mostly performs selections from Still Got The Blues. As a hard rock guitarist, Gary Moore was known for blending massive technical skill, with aggression and flash. While the blues may not be what Moore built his career on, he does it pretty well, putting the songs first, over showcasing his guitar virtuosity. Moore's singing voice doesn't have that much range, but there is some soul there, and the roughness of his singing style fits quite well with the blues.

The main performance runs about 106 minutes, and features mostly good views of the band, and Moore in particular. Guitar players should be able to pick up some insights into Moore's playing style. Drawing heavily from Still Got The Blues, highlights include some wild rocking slide work on Moving' On, and the frantic aggressive rockabilly of Texas Strut. Moore deals some scorching hot licks, and emotional vocals, on the slow numbers, All Your Love, Still Got The Blues, and Midnight Blues. The whole band comes to life and explodes, on a spunky version of You Don't Love Me.

Noted blues guitarist Albert Collins joins Moore for several numbers near the end of the show. The blues is largely about playing with emotion and feeling, and the contrast between Collins' older more traditional style and sound, and Moore's more modern pyrotechnic approach, being evident on Too Tired, Cold Cold Feeling, and Further On Up The Road. A real treat, is Moore's encore performance of blues legend Roy Buchanan's instrumental, The Messiah Will Come Again, from Moore's album After The War (1989). Burning red hot, it is an impressive, emotional, and inspired closer.

Bonus materials include three songs from a 1997 performance at Montreux. Out In The Fields, Over The Hills And Far Away, and Parisian Walkways, are songs from Moore's 80's hard rock period. They appear to be from the end of the show, or encore numbers. Moore may be a little tired, as his vocals are a bit strained and indistinct at times. Moore may not be at his best, but it's great to see this material performed live, and you do get a glimpse of the outrageous lead playing, and dive bombing whammy bar tricks, that Moore was known for in his heavy metal heyday.

This performance is an excellent representation of Gary Moore's early foray into the blues. His guitar playing has energy and emotion, and his vocal performance is pretty fiery as well. The backing band is solid, allowing Moore to shine. The energy level dips a bit when Albert Collins appears, but his presence also brings out something different from Moore and the band.
