DVD Reviews of Friday Night Lights: The Third Season

DVD Review: Outstanding TV series, better than movie and book
Summary: 5 Stars

Loved Friday Night Lights season 1, thought season 2 was a disappointment, that the story lines were a reach, not very believable.
Well, season 3 has come back with a bang. The relationship between Coach Taylor and Principal Tammy continues to evolve in a lovely way. Eric grows in his ability to communicate, not over-react, and to support growth in others.
This is one of those rare vehicles where the TV series outstrips a best-selling book and the successful movie upon which it was based. Do enjoy this season of shows.

DVD Review: A Great TV Show
Summary: 5 Stars

Friday Night Lights is a wonderful TV show. Much more than a story about football. The characters on the show are great. If you are not watching it, you are really missing out.

DVD Review: An underrated and different show on TV
Summary: 4 Stars

Most TV shows are medical, legal and crime related shows. Some of those shows are good and some are bad but those genres are sometimes tiring to constantly see on TV. Friday Night Lights is only one of a few drama shows that is different. I have been a fan of Friday Night Lights since season 1. The show is not entirely about football and it's teen characters and storylines are well crafted. Season 2 of the show was a bit of a decline from season 1 and season 2 didn't get a proper ending because of ratings decline and NBC refusal to order at least 2 episodes after the end of the writer's strike. After the writer's strike ended most network shows filmed at least two to three episodes. FNL didn't.

The production costs deal between NBC and DirecTV saved the show. Season 3 was better than season 2. In season 3 the pressures of overbearing football pushing parents, conflicts of interest in public schools, teen sex and teen characters trying to prevent themselves from living impoverished lives in the future and dealing with family changes gave the show good story material. The characters on FNL are people that TV audiences can relate to more than some characters on other TV shows. Matt Saracen is a teenage boy neglected largely by his parents but he rarely feels sorry for himself and focuses on making the best of his situation while dealing with a grandma inflicted with dementia. You won't find a teenage boy being a caretaker to an ill relative on other shows like The O.C., One Tree Hill, or 90210. Tyra Collete is a troubled teenage girl wanting to make a life better for herself and not end up like her mother or sister. She has her flaws but later redeems herself. Buddy Garrity and his daughter Lyla are two characters getting a taste living on limited means after losing their wealth. The anchors of the show are Eric and Tami Taylor a couple doing their best in their public school related jobs to help teenagers and the community. Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton have done Emmy nod worthy work since season 1 but they are continually snubbed by the Emmys in favor of actors and actresses that are on highly rated TV shows. As another reviewer pointed out FNL has won awards that Emmmy winners rarely or never receives and the AFI declared the show culturally significant in 2007. The show will likely end in season 5 but it will end as one of the most unique shows ever on TV.

DVD Review: Friday night lights 3rd season
Summary: 5 Stars

Good drama series. Better then hero's, if you love drama series and texas football this is the perfect series for you. Start in the beginning with series one and i guarantee you will want to finish them all in one night, it's that addicting. Very good series.

DVD Review: Friday Night Every Night
Summary: 5 Stars

We're not from Texas. We don't love football, but our family (2 teenage daughters) is hooked on this show. It could be the greatest acting ensemble that I've seen in a long time. Only complaint is that some of the sexual content goes too far, but the parents speak to their children about sex the way you wish you could communicate with yours. It has actually created a reason for open dialogue with our kids about. I should say, that even if we didn't have kids, my husband and I would love this show. Again, I cannot stress enough the quality of the acting and dialogue here. We are all going to be very sad when we have to make the switch to the present season in real-time, but with 3 great seasons on dvd, we shouldn't really complain about how we get more. LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!

Description of Friday Night Lights: The Third Season

Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 05/19/2009 Rating: Nr
Some televised dramas focus on families, others on singles and couples, but NBC's Friday Night Lights, among the finest shows of the decade, takes on an entire town. As with Sports Night, minimal enthusiasm for athletics presents no hindrance to enjoyment, just an interest in the concerns of Dillon, TX's populace, indelibly captured through authentic locations, handheld cameras, and naturalistic acting. If the off-shoot of creator Peter Berg's feature film doesn't look like most primetime programs, the cinematic score from Austin's Explosions in the Sky contributes to the big-screen impression.

Since the first season, Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his wife, Tami (Connie Britton), now Dillon High principal, remain constants as they guide their charges--including 17-year-old daughter Julie (Aimee Teegarden)--through games, classes, and beyond. Where Jason Street and Smash Williams began as major players, they fade from view in the third as they figure out their post-grad futures. Instead, big-hearted garage-rocker Landry (Observe and Report's Jesse Plemons) emerges as the heart of the show, while his best friend, Matt (Zach Gilford), reaches out to his estranged mother, Shelby (Kim Dickens), for help when his grandmother's deteriorating mental condition becomes too much to bear.

If everyone has financial struggles of some kind, new quarterback JD. McCoy (Jeremy Sumpter) shares no such concerns. By the end of the season, however, his controlling father, Joe (D.W. Moffett), will go too far. And after a misguided move into criminal intrigue during the second year, Lights avoids any similar missteps this time around, and the entire cast rises to the occasion, including Taylor Kitsch (Riggins), Minka Kelly (Lyla), and Adrianne Palicki (Tyra), who portrays the show's trickiest character, a self-obsessed senior who takes advantage of Landry whenever it suits her needs. Extras include deleted scenes and insightful commentary from writer/producer Jason Katims. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
