Standing in the kitchen inhaling Heavenly Hash (peanuts, marshamallows covered in milk chocolate) while watching the people 'playing their edges' was an interesting juxtaposition. But seriously, returning from my hard labor job late one evening my body and mind were very tense; I put on this DVD and starting stretchng along with Erich Schiffmann's warmup and within seven magical minutes felt soothed. The next morning when my coworkers were complaining about their inability to sleep well, I really appreciated having purchased this item.
Erich Schiffmann seems to enjoy different vantages of perspective. His editing is a little choppy, but he includes a lot into one dvd. I get the impression that it meant a lot to him to produce this dvd, that he is sincere and intense in his teaching and is always attempting to be creative and push his students gently into pushing themselves--just a guess (At once point, when asking for a face-spray, he reminded of the kindly Lion in the Wizard of Oz!). He interplays various sessions where friends practice together in good humor with other intense singular sessions. Watching their rapture was delightful. Watching their both lithe and muscular forms 'perform' athletically was both inspirational and intimidating. It was fun to take in the esoteric feel of their comaraderie. Sometimes they even made me laugh out loud, but maybe I'm just that impressionable. Anyway, they were generous in allowing their practice to be filmed. The earnest chap discoursing on the fundamentals of yoga reminds me that it is the moment-to-moment adjustments that make yoga yoga, and not to return to the ever-present tease of anxiety. Everyone seemed to have a different approach to their yoga! So this DVD has got it all; great to absorb.

2 DVD set. 2 and a half hours of instruction. This is not an instructional yoga video in the usual sense of the term. It is instructional, however, in the very best sense. What follows is a group of friends doing yoga together, as they really do it. There is no teacher guiding the session, just people doing yoga for real. Every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday friends come over and do yoga with me. I'm usually in the room from 5 - 8 p.m. People arrive and leave as fits their schedule. There is no structured format, no rules. It's freeform yoga practice. We often have music playing, but often we don't, and we spontaneously alternate between silent doing and casual talking. It's fun. I enjoy practicing like this. I think you will enjoy what you are about to see. I would recommend that you sit back, watch, and enjoy. Then get down on the floor and join us. The practice or discipline in Freedom Style Yoga involves not deciding in advance what you are supposed to do. Instead, listen inwardly for guidance and give yourself permission to do as you are prompted. Let's do yoga together. Improvise. Have fun. Let yourself be led. This is the real thing.
