DVD Reviews of Four Jills in a Jeep

DVD Review: Carole's Real Life Love Story Onscreen
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this movie!!! Carole Landis is my aunt so I would probably enjoy seeing her in anything but I think Four Jills In A Jeep is her best work. First of all she is playing herself AND she wrote the book the film is based on. Carole spent almost four years of her life traveling around the world entertaining the troops. She was a true American hero and on several occasions she almost lost her life. Now I understand that this is Hollywood's version of World War 2 and unfortunately the movie is not always true to life. It's still a treat to see Carole onscreen with her dear friends Kay Francis, Martha Raye, and Mitzi Mayfair. The best part of the movie is that we get to be a part of Carole's real life romance with Major Tommy Wallace (played by the very handsome John Harvey). Their whirlwind love affair is the heart of the movie and makes you wish they lived happily ever after in real life too. Carole never looked better than she did in Four Jills In A Jeep. Thank goodness she was back to blonde after several years as brunette. There are a bunch great songs and musical numbers. My fave is Carole's fabulous rendition of Crazy Me. She could really sing. I could watch this movie a million times and never get tired of it :-) :-) :-)

DVD Review: i just didn't understand this title
Summary: 4 Stars

i saw this movie in a video section of a department store and bought it, when it was on vhs. it was certainly interesting, but how come if the story is true, the romance was fictional? either something is true or it isn't. otherwise it is just hollywood's enhancement to make the story more sellable/marketable. hey, i am all for creativity, but adding fictional details into a vehicle that is supposed to be true does not make something made up the truth. this is a very enjoyable story. and i will be buying this one. i'm just diappointed that this is packaged as a true story. only some of the details are true.

DVD Review: DISSAPOINTED

alice fay was not really in this movie. just a song. i was dissapointed as it was noted as an alice fay movie.

DVD Review: Quality.Service, Safety
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the DVD 'four Jills in A Jeep" with some trepidation as I hate giving bankcard details on the internet but all is well so far.
The DVD is as promised 'new' and sealed/ I had to alter my 'zone"(?) to play it on my PC but had no difficulty with my DVD player. The quality - despite the years - is very good. Even the sound has 'travelled' better than I had expected. The service from the supplier was excellent and well within the time specified despite the Christmas break. Thank you. Now if only you could find more of the Dick Haymes movies !!! William Bourke

DVD Review: Good package of crummy film
Summary: 3 Stars

"Four Jills" is a third rate musical which recreates, to some degree, the USO tour of 4 second rate stars during the war. While one can only have respect for the 4 Jills and what they did, the film is a dreary, artificial valentine to their work.

It starts by recreating "Command Performance", a radio program for the armed forces in which film stars would make guest appearances. This gives an excuse for the appearance of Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda and later in the film, Alice Faye, recreating songs from their musicals. The film then moves to the USO tour and each star has their moment; Carol Landis for glamour, 1 song and a trite love interest, Martha Raye for her trademark broad comedy and song "Mr Paganini", Kay Francis as the leader of the quartet and providing some class and sophistication and the unstarry, Mitzi Mayfair, who performs the best number with her athletic dancing. Dick Haymes is in there too and induces sleep every time he performs his dull crooning.

If the film is poor, the extras are not. First of all, a featurette is included which focuses on what really happened to the 4 Jills and the role of Hollywood in entertaining the troops. There are 2 deleted numbers from Martha Raye which should have been left in because they would have livened up the proceedings. Raye's rendition of "Comin' in on a Wing and a Prayer" is particularly good but it was probably too down beat and realistic for inclusion. A neat feature is the isolated score track whereby you can listen to the music without the dialogue. A still and advertising gallery round out the extras.

This is a good package of a film which may have some historical significance but has little else to offer. During the war, such films always made money. It can be purchased as part of the Alice Faye Collection Volume 2 within which it is an absurd inclusion given Faye makes a 3 minute appearance.

Description of Four Jills in a Jeep

This star studded musical is a cinematic tribute to the successful USO tour of Kay Francis, Martha Raye, Mitzi Mayfair and Carole Landis who entertained soldiers from England to North Africa. Embellished with some fictional romance, striking choreography and plenty of laughs, this patriotic film salutes all the entertainers who did their part for "the boys." Includes special appearances by Alice Faye, Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda, George Jessel and the Jimmy Doresy Orchestra.
