DVD Reviews of For Me and My Gal (Snap Case)DVD Review: Great Start! Propaganda finish. Summary: 4 StarsThis movie really shows what an excellent singer and actress Judy Garland is. And what a great actor Gene Kelly is as well. They both make our modern actors seem rather flat and expressionless. The story centers around Gene Kelly convincing Judy Garland to join up with his vaudeville gig and leave the one she is currently with. Naturally, they fall in love, although there are quite a few hurdles to overcome. One of the highlights of the movie is actually the singing of a character named Eve Minard, a fabulous Opera singer. Her voice is phenomenal. George Murphy is quite the gallant character who is also in love with Judy, but backs out graciously. I personally was hoping Judy's character would choose him, but I'm not the screen writer. The movie starts off fabulously and is very entertaining with lots of fun songs and dances. About midway through it turns into a WWII propaganda film, even though it is set in WWI. These are hard to escape in this era, and they are hard to sit through. Not that the message isn't relevant, but it is so overdone and before the disillusionments of Vietnam and so forth, that they are a hard pill to swallow. Nontheless, the film is enjoyable.
DVD Review: for me and my gal Summary: 5 Starsa really marvellous film which has lost none of it's magic from when i first saw it at the cinema many years ago. kelly and garland provide anexcellant leading pair ably supported by george murphy. i shall view this film time and time again because of the great songs in it
DVD Review: for me and my girl Summary: 5 Starsa great film that anyone over 50 will enjoy that loves musicals- Judy Galand and Gene Kelley are great
DVD Review: My Favorite Musical Ever.. Summary: 5 StarsI have always been a fan of both Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. The pairing of the two together for a musical was genious. The characters are believable, the story shows all the ranges of humanity....Joy, Love, Loss, Pain, Selfishness, and finally...Heroism. You will not be disappointed in this film.
DVD Review: Wow! This musical has it all!!! Summary: 5 StarsI'm ashamed to admit I had not seen many of Judy Garland's movies. After watching this beautiful film, I've now added quite a few to my collection. I never realized Judy could REALLY act as well as sing and dance. "One of the greatest performers", as my mom used to say. I'm a believer now! She & Gene Kelly have a chemistry that looks easy & Gene was also a very underrated actor. I loved everything about this movie--the music, settings, history of performing at the start of the 20th century. It's one of the few mvoies about WWI that shows a little of how it was "behind the front lines". I also like George Murphy. A great movie that's more than a musical--it shows the twist and turns of life and how we all need to be held responsible for our actions. GREAT FILM!!!
Description of For Me and My Gal (Snap Case)Gene Kelly makes his film debut in this WW I musical playing a man who deliberately injures his hand to avoid being drafted into the army. He starts a vaudeville act with a young woman and they become determined to play The Palace. "Say, he looks like an actor," says the platform conductor. And with that introduction, Gene Kelly steps off the train and into his film career. After starring on Broadway in Pal Joey, Kelly made his film debut in For Me and My Gal opposite Judy Garland, with the pair playing vaudeville performers who team up to find success and, of course, romance. But just when things are looking up, World War I intervenes, and Kelly has to take drastic measures to keep a promise and avoid the war, at least temporarily. Bad move, Gene. Filmed in 1942, For Me and My Gal vigorously supports the war effort, including teaching Kelly the error of his ways. The old-time setting also allows for a basketful of nostalgic charmers, including "After You've Gone," "Oh You Beautiful Doll," and "Ballin' the Jack," and Kelly and Garland's crooning and tapping of the title tune is pure joy. --David Horiuchi
