DVD Reviews of Flatland: The Movie (Educational Edition)DVD Review: Great Film! Summary: 5 StarsIn my opinion this is the best treatment of the book to be put on film. It's smart and funny. It explores not only mathematical concepts but larger political and philosophical themes. It also touches on very real concerns of state authority dissent while avoiding partisan pandering that would freeze it too much in our own time and place. Ultimately kids (and adults) who watch this version of Flatland are prompted to think more not just about math but about how they exist in the world they inhabit.
DVD Review: FANTASTIC!!! Summary: 5 StarsI just received this yesterday after waiting for a year for it to be released (I ordered the home edition - which is the same as this except different licensing) This movie exceded my expectations and is a WONDERFUL tool in introducing third (and fourth +) dimensions or just to watch. I purchased this for myself and I am recommending it to friends (two have already ordered it)
Special effects and acting is great. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough. Even though it is only 35 minutes long, it introduces what could be a difficult concept so plainly and with entertainment that kids will love it (as well as grown up kids like me!) and it gets kids to think outside the box - something that is lacking in most children today.
DVD Review: A Great tool for teachers and math lovers! Summary: 5 StarsI just bought this DVD a couple weeks ago. I've already shown it to my classes and plan to show it to future classes in conjunction with having my students read the book. The movie is great and the kids love it! The visualizations really help to explain dimensions and keep the students' interest. The bonus 4-D featurette with Thomas Banchoff is thought-provoking and will intrigue adults, as well. Martin Sheen is a great voice in the film and the extra worksheets are a perfect addition to my lesson plans! Thanks!
DVD Review: My classroom loved it Summary: 5 StarsI've been teaching geometry for high school for 10 years and I've always loved having the class read Flatland. Some of the kids get lost in the language of the time and the political/sexism satire. But I love the look in their eyes when they start thinking about other dimensions. So when I heard there was a movie version, I couldn't wait to get it. I first watched it at home with my own kids, 6 and 10. They were mesmerized by the wonderful animation the entire time - the characters feel so alive you want to visit Flatland and check out all the props and sets that fly by in the movie. The animators took certain liberties with Abbott's story and world, but they added even more things that increased my enjoyment. There's so much in the book, I'm glad they mainly focused on the dimensional ideas while dropping in references to ideas from the book (irregular shapes & racism, the class system, edicts of the Circle priests, etc). My kids loved it at home (sparking lots of conversation and some new geometrical drawings for the fridge), and my summer school class loved it just as much. I had them read the book as usual, but as a treat we watched the movie. I think it really helped them connect any gaps in their understanding by creating real characters they could relate to. I'm really glad there's a female protagonist in Hex, the granddaughter to the square. It's different from the book obviously but to see the girls in my class connect with a curious, empowered heroine was worth it in my opinion. And the voice talent was top notch. I love Michael York as the Sphere and Martin Sheen as the Square! And there are some great jokes with Lineland and Pointland too. All in all, don't just take my word for it. Check out Flatland: the Movie for yourself if you want a teaching tool that students will want to see more than once.
DVD Review: Educational and Fun! Summary: 4 StarsThis is a beautiful and thought provoking animated version of the classic story, "Flatland". Suitable for both younger and older audiences, "Flatland" tells the story of Arthur Square and his search for understanding beyond the dimension he inhabits. The professional quality of the acting, music, and animation make this short a trill to watch.
