DVD Reviews of Flash Gordon (Saviour Of The Universe Edition)DVD Review: A little corny at times, thus minus a star, but still pretty good. Summary: 4 StarsI first seen this as a kid, and loved it. I just recently bought it, and realized how corny it is at times. When you're a kid you don't know about corny, but when you get older, you start to realize what corny is and it's not good. But if you try to ignore the corny parts, it's actually quite good. The film can actually be quite dramatic at times. Performances, apart from Sam J. (what's his name?)'s acting, are pretty good. Too bad about the Flash Gordon guy - terrible actor. The story and plot are great since this is just a remake of the original 1936 "Flash Gordon" serial. The end is action-packed, and even though the special effects are not "Star Wars" effects, I still thought they were pretty good. Then again, I am a "Dr. Who" fan, so special effects don't bother me as much as some people. If you like old sci-fi shows like "Flash Gordon" and "Dr. Who", then I highly recommed this film.
DVD Review: Sorry "Star Wars." "Flash Gordon" is MUCH BETTER! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not really the biggest science fiction fan, but there is no denying that "Flash Gordon" is a real masterpiece.
I say it is much better than "Star Wars," because for the most part, "Star Wars" is basically a good guy, bad guy, shoot em up series. (With the one exception of "Revenge of the Sith" which shows Anakin's tragic fall into evil.)
"Flash Gordon" is a much deeper story. Flash is an ordinary football player who finds himself suddenly thrust into space, and he discovers that Ming the Merciless is going to destroy the earth. So, Flash tries to stop him with what knowledge he has. (Football knowledge!) So rather than superheroes, we have ordinary people who use what knowledge they have. (Great!)
Moving on, we see that there are different factions who oppose Ming, but the different factions don't care much for each other either. So, our football hero has to do what he can to not only make friends with the different factions, but get them to work together against Ming as well. (Even better!)
Max Von Sydow makes Ming very, very bad. But he carries a charm that makes it virtually impossible not to like him a little. (Especially when he has a one on one chat with Flash and expresses that he would rather have Flash on his side.)
Dale is a great woman of interest for Flash. She can be romantic, but she also shows a little 'girl power,' and she has a now and then explosive fury which adds some comic relief: "Let go of me! I just got engaged!"
All in all it is a great story full of menace, suspense, and the much needed comic relief. It also has a great coming together of different subplots, not to mention the totally awesome music by Queen.
I'm not even a science fiction fan, and I say there is NOT ONE dull moment.
An interesting side note is that this movie has a nice transition from 70s-80s feel.
DVD Review: Flash...AA-aaah!!!! Summary: 5 StarsOne of my all-time favorite movies. If you love the movie, you should also buy the soundtrack. The combo of the movie + Queen's music is wicked awesome.
DVD Review: Super Movie! Summary: 5 StarsThis movie is so fun to watch. My oldest daughter was asking about this movie the other day. I have it on vhs, but would prefer it on dvd. Some of the lines can be corny at times, but that's okay. The movie is terrific. The color in the film is vibrant. Some of the characters costumes, and the props are beautiful. I wouldn't say that this a movie for little ones because of the violence or adult themes though.
DVD Review: One Of My All Time Faves Summary: 5 StarsThere aren't too many films out there like Flash Gordon. You've got a film with a big budget, a relatively unknown actor in the lead, and a soundtrack by Queen. These are interesting, but it's not what I find the most fascinating. What's fascinating is the style the film makers used. The film is hilarious, one of the funniest films I've ever seen. It's campy on purpose, but in a different way you're used to seeing. It's not a spoof or a comedy, and the actors are not winking at the audience to let them in on the joke. The actors are doing this straight faced, almost as if they are oblivious to the utterly ridiculous things they are saying.
Since the film is not blatantly stating to the audience that this is all tongue in cheek, it's easy for the casual viewer to see this movie as an attempt at a serious Sci-Fi film that ended up being corny and hokey through bad acting, directing and writing. But you have to take a step back to see the big picture. In reality the film is INTENDED to look like an attempt at a serious Sci-Fi film that ended up being corny and hokey through bad acting, directing and writing. Genius if you ask me(but why the hell would you ask me?). This can be credited in part to writer Lorenzo Semple Jr. It becomes all the more clear when you find out that Semple wrote Batman The Movie and numerous episodes of the Batman television series.
For the uninitiated, Flash Gordon is a football star who finds himself and his new girlfriend "volunteering" for a mission to save the Earth, which has come under attack from the evil Emperor Ming. Flash, Dale and Dr. Zarkov take a rocket to Mongo, where Ming rules with an iron fist(actually with a glowing ring that makes a cool noise every time he uses it). Naturally everybody in this galaxy a zillion light years away speaks English(some of them even have British accents, making it all the more universal). After escaping Ming's clutches, Flash forms an army made up of the feuding Kingdoms of Mongo. Brian Blessed is Vultan, ruler of the flying hawk people, and Timothy Dalton is Prince Barin, who's planet is a big forest and inhabited by guys who wear green Robin Hood type outfits. With the army assembled, Flash leads them to battle.
Like I said, the film is entertaining and fun as hell. I loved this movie when I was a kid, and I probably love it even more now(which is a cool thing considering films loved as a child tend to be viewed in a different light when you're an adult). Fortunately the film is again available on DVD(it went OOP a few years back). Unfortunately the "special" edition isn't so special. There's an interview with writer Semple, but little else. At least we have the film back though.
See it soon!
Description of Flash Gordon (Saviour Of The Universe Edition)Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 08/07/2007 Run time: 112 minutes Rating: Pg When the totalitarian planet of Mongo decides on a whim to obliterate Earth, it's up to the lunk-headed quarterback Flash Gordon and his oddball companions to make the universe safe for democracy. Based on the classic (and infinitely more reputable) comic strip and its '30s screen serialization, this cotton-candy-colored trash classic deserves immortality for Queen's unforgettably pulsating soundtrack alone. The legendary Max von Sydow appears to be having a blast as the evil Ming the Merciless, while Ornella Muti, as his daughter, is the living embodiment of what attracts adolescent boys to comics in the first place. (She makes Barbarella look mundane.) One of the most shamelessly entertaining movies ever made, this is a knowingly absurd sensory freak-out that'll have the viewer blissfully checking the sky afterward for signs of Hawkmen. --Andrew Wright
