Fireboats of 9-11 is not only about 9-11, rather it is a history of the Marine Division of the FDNY. The archival movie footage - some from the nineteenth century, is truly amazing. It is supplemented by excellent animations of other events, and still photographs enhanced with the "Ken Burns effect."

Some of the little-seen images of land-units responding to 9-11 illustrate why the firefighters' loss of life was so high - the crashes happened during shift-change at most fire houses, so units responded with double or triple crews, men riding anywhere they could hang on.

Description of Fire Boats of 9/11

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the retired fireboat John Harvey was moored at her dock on the Hudson River, an overlooked tourist attraction. Later that day, the Harvey was among the many vessels fighting the blazes and providing the only water to get to Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks. FIREBOATS OF 9/11 tells the complete story of the unique force to which the Harvey belongs, which has helped protect New York City for over 100 years. Veterans of the service talk about long-ago disasters, such as the ammunition ship fire in 1943. See footage of current training maneuvers and get a below-decks tour of the state-of-the-art vessels that are used today.
