DVD Reviews of Faust (Restored 2-Disc Deluxe Edition)

DVD Review: Behold!
Summary: 5 Stars

Never in the short history of filmmaking has a director ever been able to completely put his imagination on celluloid as F.W. Murnau has done with FAUST. The film will leave your mouth open (and somewhat dry) at the marvels you see before you. Nor is it merely a visual effects extravaganza either for each effect, each shot, each cut, moves the dark story towards its tear-jerker ending. In typical Murnau fashion, the film begins as dark supernatural thriller, then moves, quite logically, into romantic comedy, then logically again into tragedy. The entire spectrum of Drama is covered in under two hours.

I initially hated this new set because of the weak scores offered on disc 1, which contains the stunning German print. The default score, offered up by Kino (who seem bent on introducing bands or composers utterly unsuited for silent film) is just wretched; squeaky chamber music, the entire thing sounds as if the players are all on the verge of suicide. But another score is offered as an option, a beautiful and beautifully played piano arrangement of the 1926 orchestral arrangement and it is definitely the one to go for (but turn it down, for it is so loud it sounds as if the piano is in the living room). I miss Timothy Brock's massive score, which was composed for the 1930 American print (released on disc 2 and of inferior quality) but since that won't fit against the restored German print (due to the use of two different negatives)the piano score does just fine. In fact, it works better than I thought it would - Murnau's film is so over the top that the smaller, simpler piano score compliments it tremendously.

The German print is in exquisite condition. Threads and fibers of textiles and wood grain of chairs and doors all can be seen as if the film had been shot yesterday. Film grain is still apparent and the DVD upconverts so well to HD that I can't imagine it looking much better when it finally makes it to Blu-ray.

The story is a theological mess, and thank god for that. Goethe, Marlowe, original source legends, all jumble together in smoke and mirrors fantasy that leaves images in your mind for days afterwards. But for Murnau, the one and only saviour is Love, and neither God nor Satan can do anything about it.

Description of Faust (Restored 2-Disc Deluxe Edition)

F.W. MURNAU S MASTERPIECE OF GERMAN SILENT CINEMA

Mobilizing the full resources of the Ufa Studios, F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu, Sunrise) orchestrated a colossal adaptation of Goethe s FAUST that ranks alongside Fritz Lang s Metropolis as the greatest achievement of the German silent cinema. Gösta Ekman stars as the titular alchemist who, struggling with his faith amidst a devastating plague, is offered the power to cure and the gift of youth... in exchange for his soul. As the diabolical Mephisto, Emil Jannings (The Last Laugh) delivers a performance of operatic scale and intensity, by turns charming, comical, and horrific. This special Kino edition contains the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation s meticulous restoration of the original German version of the film (with unique hand-painted intertitles), as well as a lengthier alternate cut prepared by the Ufa Studios in 1930.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
- Two-DVD edition featuring the restored German version (with optional English subtitles) and the previous U.S. release version
- (The Language of Shadows: Faust) a 53-minute documentary on the making of Murnau s film
- New musical score by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra in 5.1 Stereo Surround or 2.0 Stereo
- The lost screen test footage of Ernst Lubitsch s abandoned 1923 production Marguerite and Faust.
- Image Gallery
- Essay by film historian Jan Christopher Horak
