DVD Reviews of Fargo [Blu-ray]DVD Review: I'm no technical genius, but this looks like a mediocre print to me Summary: 3 StarsFargo is only my fifth Blu-ray, so I'm by no means an expert on this format. That said ... I was pretty disappointed in it. And I'm not at all surprised that the product reviews posted so far have included a back-and-forth disagreement about whether or not the movie looks "good" on Blu-ray.
I suppose it's inevitable that an "older" movie will not look as good as, say, Land of the Lost on Blu-ray (though it's a bit disheartening to think of the mid-1990s as the distant cinematic past!) But Fargo seems to look *extremely* old on Blu-ray; it's fuzzy as all get-out, particularly in outdoor scenes. The snowy landscapes, rather than appearing blinding white, look dull and grainy. Is this the result of the film's age, low budget, or a lousy Blu-ray transfer? I have no idea, frankly.
But I'm bummed about it. By comparison, my copy of Star Trek IV -- which is about a decade older than this movie -- looks pristine. Now why is that? Has Star Trek perhaps been subjected to all kinds of digital trickery, while Fargo's transfer remains "pure"?
Well, if digital trickery can reduce all this grain, then I'm all for digital trickery. It's very, very distracting to watch a movie that looks "fuzzified" (for lack of a more technical term). And I despair for older movies in general if larger TV screens and the Blu-ray format are destined to make them appear so ancient!
On another topic, the other disappointing thing about this Blu-ray is that it actually has fewer special features than the special edition DVD. So I really don't think the upgrade is worth it at this point ... re-buying even a great movie in a new format can arguably be construed as a waste of money, and this time, I'm not sure there's any benefit at all.
So, great movie, disappointing print. I almost don't care whether the grain "belongs" or not; bottom line is, it's sadly distracting. I can foresee a time, years from now, when the latest generation of shiny discs will debut, the grain problem is solved, and I'm forced to re-buy Fargo once again, like a man caught in a time loop...!
DVD Review: movies i am sorry i saw Summary: 1 Starsya i know it got awards but this is the most horrible, sick, boring, etc etc, movie i have ever seen . real waste of time. if stupid and throwing someone in a shredder is your idea of comedy than be my guest and the dialogue and phony swedish accents is like nails on a chalk board.
DVD Review: A movie that Goes Far Summary: 5 StarsDo not believe the Coen Brothers when they this is a true story. But it is something that can happen. People have been known to stage `wife kidnappings' for various reasons and things often go wrong in any crime.
Things do go horrendously wrong for William H Macy's car salesman character here, with Frances McDormand (the local sheriff) hot on his trail. She's pregnant and tired, but she does not give up. The two small-time criminals (played brilliantly by Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) hired by Macy for the dastardly deed seemingly cannot do anything right and leave a trail of bodies and blood on the snow. Of course, they do fall out with each other by the end of the movie and one of them ends up in a wood chipper.
The movie has plenty of light moments and humor despite the high body count and you will get a load of the Minnesota accent and dialect by the time it finishes. But all these elements are well integrated into the movie so that no incident feels out of place. The editor has done a superb job.
This movie will be remembered for its lush photography. The brilliant white snowy landscapes will challenge your telly and please your eyes. The blu-ray transfer is obviously not top grade, but this is the best picture available on any home video release of Fargo. The sound too is average, but then this is a dialogue driven movie with some action in between.
This is one of the Coens' best efforts, eclipsed only by their recent hits such as No Country for Old Men. It is not a walk in the park, for this is a movie that depends heavily on violent undertones. Fargo is a memorable film that deserves a place in your movie library.
DVD Review: It doesn't get much better thank this Summary: 5 StarsThis film had a great story, geat photography and great acting that almost changes the improbable into reality. If it were not so good, I would be tempted to describe it as black comedy. I prefer to think of it as good drama which contains some black comedy. I do not think the Blu-ray version is a noticable improvement over the original because the story is so engrossing and the original photography was so good, you don't really notice any significant incremental contribution made by Blu-ray. Great film, but certainly not for kids or those with an aversion to some graphic violence. This is one of the times I am very much in agreement with the critics.
DVD Review: All aboard the grain train... Summary: 3 StarsThere isn't a lot to say about this amazing movie that hasn't already been said don'tcha know..? It has a perfect cast and an amazing drollness about it that cannot be put into words.. either you get it or you don't. There is only one instance in this movie that if I were editing would have been cut - Margies lunch with 'Mike'. I suppose the humorous point is supposed to be that Asians can talk like folks from the north; but it came off as exhaustive filler.
So.. what's with all the grain ya? Well, I've never seen anything like this. Whether it's supposed to be there or not it is VERY distracting - the movie is always in motion! The background is always 'glistening' with noise and grain.. I for one am going to sell my Blu Ray at some point and just stick with the dvd.. a movie in this genre scarcely benefits from Hi Def anyway, but one that looks like this is even less necessary to own.
Movie - 4 stars
Transfer - 1 star
