DVD Reviews of Fantastic Planet

DVD Review: Copyright owner?
Summary: 5 Stars

Short: I am looking for the copyright owner of this movie. Any information would be appreciated.

Long: I remember this movie from my youth. Along with my band, we are planning to write a sync'ed album to match up with the movie. I know...a strange project, but something I want to do. The problem is...before getting too far into this project, I would like to contact the copyright owner to secure distribution rights (in some form) so we could offer the movie pre-sync'ed with the music...instead of requiring the user to manually start the two (DVD and CD) together. Or...simply offer the movie and music in digital form. If anyone can help point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated.

DVD Review: Trippy Movie With An Ambiguous Message
Summary: 4 Stars

Even though this film was released when I was a teenager and was regularly going to the cinema, I never heard of it until several years ago and then only in the context of the avant-garde soundtrack which I was trying to obtain based on its reputation for giving the listener an otherworldly experience. Well, I kind of gave up on the soundtrack but decided to get a copy of the movie so I could enjoy both.
Looking at the star ranking of Fantastic Planet, one who hadn't seen it before might get the impression that people find it mediocre. But if you read most of the comments of those who rank it low, their reasons mostly had nothing to do with the movie itself but with other issues outside of the seller's control. Those who focused on content mostly ranked it higher. Personally, I find it to be one of the most original and engrossing animated films I've ever seen. This is a very trippy movie with a purposefully ambiguous message probably due to the fact that much of it was created in a country (Czechoslovakia) where freedom of expression was at that time very limited. Who the Oms represent and who the Draags represent probably depends very much on the vantage point of the viewer. When you are watching, be sure to keep in mind that this was made when the MAD doctrine ruled relations between the West and the Iron Curtain and think about how this film addresses that.
I enjoyed the story, the animation, AND the soundtrack, though it was hardly the earth-shaking musical tour de force it was reputed to be. I also enjoyed the very humorous short animated Rene Laloux film Les Escargots and the interview with Laloux. One aspect of the film I found annoying was that the sub-titles did not always show where they could be read, but that is a minor complaint that may not affect you. Unless you have a DVD player that is a dinosaur, ignore all the caterwauling and add Fantastic Planet to your video library.

DVD Review: Too Eerie For Me
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm surprised so many people are having trouble playing the disc. This appears to be the version I watched and I had no problems. I have a cheap/ old dvd player, maybe the others' dvd players are too nice. :D

Okay... onto the review...

This movie seemed right up my alley, but I had to turn it off about 1/2 - 3/4 of the way through. It was making me nauseous. When it wasn't being highly psychadelic (which I can usually appreciate), it was being violently disturbing and the music...oh the music, will haunt me for a lifetime. I certainly hope no one decides to watch this for psycadelia as I imagine they would have to be institutionalized afterward. This is a very, very disturbing movie.

That being said, it is an interesting allegory and there is much here which can be discussed. I imagine this is a great film to show a sociology or poly-sci class (assuming they can stomach it). Artistically, it is sound, it is moving and perhaps cathardic instead of pop and commercial like so much film work being done today.

So, for me, it's a two-star film because I couldn't get through it, but for those of heartier-stock it probably rates much higher. My best suggestion is to rent it first, don't buy it based solely on all the rave reviews.

DVD Review: Sadly continuing to wait
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this film on "Up all Night" on the USA Network seemingly ions ago. I recorded it on VHS. Alas that tape was removed from my possesion by an inconsiderate oaf.

Since then I have hoped for a re-issue of this masterpiece. My joy at having finally found the Film available on DVD has been squashed by the inadequate quality of either issue of this film. I guess I will continue to wait until an acceptable quality transfer of this piece is made. My opinion is that you should wait too.

DVD Review: Creepily awesome
Summary: 5 Stars

Such a weird/cool/creepy movie. Humans (Om's) are the pets to huge blue aliens (Dregs). Aside from having an amazing soundtrack courtesy Alain Goraguer (sampled by the likes of the infamous Lord Quas), this movie will make you think twice about how we live as humans, and how you treat your pets.

Description of Fantastic Planet

Ren? Laloux's mesmerising psychedelic sci-fi animated feature won the Special Jury Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival and is a landmark of European animation. Based on Stefan Wul's novel Oms en s?rie [Oms by the Dozen], Laloux's breathtaking vision was released in France as La Plan?te sauvage [The Savage Planet]; in the USA as Fantastic Planet; and immediately drew comparisons to Swift's Gulliver's Travels and Planet of the Apes (both the 1968 film and Boule's 1963 novel). Today, the film can be seen to prefigure much of the work of Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) due to its palpable political and social concerns, cultivated imagination, and memorable animation techniques.

Fantastic Planet tells the story of Oms, a human-like species, kept as domesticated pets by an alien race of blue giants called Draags. The story takes place on the Draags' planet Ygam, where we follow our narrator, an Om called Terr, from infancy to adulthood. He manages to escape enslavement from a Draag learning device used to educate the savage Oms - and begins to organise an Om revolt. The imagination invested in the surreal creatures, music and sound design, and eerie landscapes, is immense and unforgettable. This release includes the early LaLoux short The Snails.

Special Features: English Language version, Original Subtitled version, photo gallery, trailer, Fantastic Laloux, the new 26 minute documentary on director Rene Laloux, short animated film Les Escargots (The Snails), an animated segment of Sean Lennon's music video for "Would I Be The One", inspired by Fantastic Planet.
