If you haven't heard these recordings, you have a nice surprise ahead of you.
I found that Mullova interpretation of Mendelssohn was delightfully restrained which allowed for the heavenly aspects of the piece to emerge. I was equally pleased with her Beethoven where her violin seems to literally sing to us in a beautiful human voice. Beneath the surface, you can feel the controlled power of Mullova, John Eliot Gardiner, and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire. It's like watching heavyweights delicately dancing ballet to exquisite chamber music. You know there's the power there to blow us away, but that they want to enrapture us instead.
From the opening bars this version of the Beethoven Violin Concerto announces that we are about to hear something quite different. The sheer verve of the opening sequence grips one's attention very firnly indeed, the technical mastery of her instrument distinguishes the soloist and the concerto continues quite unswervingly. Of particular interest is a portion which has never appeared in either of the two existing recordings in my collection and so the entire concerto absolutely commands your attention for fear of missing yet another nuance. A wonderful addition to any classical collection and certainly not a "duplicate".
This new Blu-ray recording will appeal most to people who like to hear classic pieces of the repertoire performed in ways that aren't the typical fare.
