DVD Reviews of Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives!

DVD Review: Where Are All These 5 Star Reviews Coming From?
Summary: 1 Stars

This, without a doubt, is one of the worst movies I've sat through to the end. What makes it all the worst is how utterly awful it is compared to the first Eddie and the Cruisers movie.

Where to start?
Acting- I love Michael Pare in the original and Streets of Fire. Sure, he's no Brando, but he CAN act. In this stinker, he has the same absolute blank expression for at least the first 10 minutes he's on screen and for I don't know how many minutes in the movie as a whole. That's not acting and it sure isn't direction. The love interest is pretty to look at, but utterly unconvincing in her role. To be fair, this is a script issue (see below.) The sax player comes off the best of the new chracters and adds a bit of gravitas to the lines he's given. The actor playing Sal, Eddie's old bass player, also aquits himself well and the movie as a whole would have benefitted from him being in it more. It would have been a no-brainer for Sal to also come out of retirement and join Eddie's new band- tension from the past threatens the new band but is resolved through friendship....that right there is more compelling of a plot point that can be found in this movie....but I digress, which leads us to-

Script- Imagine that Bruce Springsteen recorded The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle and then followed it up with Born to Run and then alledgedly died in a mysterious car crash and the body was never found. Then imagine that Bruce shows up as "Joe" playing in bars in Montreal, sounding like Bruce and looking like Bruce, except for a thin mousetache, and NO ONE FIGURES THIS OUT except the older sax player, who figures it out by sound, not sight? Totally unbelievable premise. Overlooking the premise, the script is cliched, stilted and just plain raw. A 2nd year playwright student could've taken a 1 week whack at this script improved it immeasurably. The characters are thin charactures of who they are suppose to be- the love interest who wants to reform our hero to Rock and Roll, the snotty guitar protege, the so-slimey-that-grease-runs-off-them music moguls. Eddie is sullen and pissed off most of the time. Sal is the only one who comes off ok and he's a character from the first movie.

Direction- Here is where this movie reaaaaalllly falls on it's face. Scene after scene is just so over the top that I'd be surprised if any props or sets survived the screnery chewing this director let the actors do. I'll lay the many bad cue ins and scene cuts at the director's feet as well. Oh, and let's not forget Eddie's haircut and moustache shave that happen in the blink of a cut with no transition whatsover. Couldn't they afford a 15 second scene in a motel bathroom and a can of shaving cream?

I'd put the first Eddie and the Cruisers firmly in my top 10 music movies of all times. I mean it. I love that movie and that's what makes the warts on this pig stand out all the more.

Only recommended viewing for those who get together with friends for drinks and bad, bad movies...
