DVD Reviews of East of Eden

DVD Review: Another lost treasure found again AND restored :-)
Summary: 5 Stars

If a poll was taken prior to 1980, I wonder what percent of the people in that poll knew that James Dean's big screen debut in 1955 of this great novel by John Steinbeck realized that film was only 1/4 of the story. In this 3 part epic released on ABC in 1980, we are treated to the entire sweeping epic echoing through 3 generations of the Trask family. Warren Oates as Civil War veteran Cyrus, Timothy Bottoms and Bruce Boxleitner as his sons Adam and Charles both fighting for equal love from him, and Jane Seymour as Cathy Ames a (in Steinbeck's eyes) devil possessed child who grows to womanhood, allegedly burning her family home down, and takes work as a prostitute before coming between the 2 brothers who are still at times at each other's throats. She gives birth to fraternal twins who are destined to live out their lives as a modern Cain and Abel, after which Cathy (unknown to them) once again goes off to prostitution and becomes the well known Monterey Madam Kate. By the way, that's Tim Bottoms' kid brother Sam as Caleb (Cal) the Cain half of the twins and Hart Bochner (son of veteran actor Lloyd) as Aron, the Abel half. Also, co starring Lloyd Bridges as Samuel Hamilton who helps Adam develop his land after moving to California, veteran oriental actor Soon Teck Oh as Lee, the Chinese servant Adam hires after moving west who proves to be more than just a simple house boy, Anne Baxter as Faye, the original Monterey madam who takes Cathy/Kate under her wing when she first leaves the Trask home, Howard Duff as eastern whoremaster Jules Edwards who meets Cathy before the Trask brothers, veteran bit part actor M. Emmett Walsh as Deputy and then later Sheriff Horace Quinn who protects both Cathy's new identity as Kate and Adam at the same time (he is mistakenly billed as E. Emmett Walsh in the ending credits), and future Indiana Jones love interest Karen Allen as Abra, the good natured teenage girl who becomes enamored with Aron and then later Cal. This miniseries as I stated was originally released in 3 parts, episodes 1 and 3 at 3 hours minus commercials and episode 2 at 2 hours). After disappearing for 4 years, it resurfaced prior to video release in 1985 trimmed down to 4 hours (or 3 hours and 10 minutes minus commercials). 1 hour of footage without commercials was trimmed from episode 1 alone. Starmaker Home Video released a 2 tape in SP mode then later a 1 tape in EP mode copy of this version in 1990. Soon after, word must have gotten to them that it was cut, so they reissued it (the 1 tape copy at least) at 375 minutes. Besides more tape on the spool, you can tell the difference in these 2 copies because the images of the stars are in motion on the longer one, and for weird reasons the mistake on Emmett Walsh's name in the closing credits was corrected on the short copy. Also, the longer one plays continuous as 1 film. While the picture quality on this tape was par for the course (although in some places dark), the overall sound was very poor, and faded out on a number of occasions. Even if you weren't deaf, you needed to turn the closed captions on your tv on. Now the DVD is available and is much better color wise, and the sound is ideal throughout. Moreover, I have just discovered that even at 375 minutes, my tape was still slightly cut. For example, the scene (on DVD) after episode 2's opening credits when Adam comes to the doctor to learn Cathy is pregnant has some footage that was NOT on my tape. Also, after the credits on episode 3 which takes place in Adam's home after leaving Cathy at the whorehouse, the dialogue between Adam and Lee is longer on the disc than on the tape. I am sure there are even more spots that my tape was cut. I am so glad that this once lost gem from the early 80s has resurfaced and on a permanent COMPLETE edition. For those of you who have read the book, yes you will find some things missing from this film, but when you compare it to the 1955 movie there is no contest. While the former had a good cast for its day, only this version covers the story from Adam's birth to the end. Get it while it's hot :-)

Description of East of Eden

Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck considered East of Eden his quintessential novel. At more than six hours, this sumptuous production brings Steinbeck?s bestseller to the screen more fully and faithfully than any other adaptation. Sweeping from Connecticut to California and from the Civil War to World War I, it follows three generations of the tumultuous Trask family: patriarch Cyrus (Warren Oates); his feuding sons, Adam and Charles (Timothy Bottoms, Bruce Boxleitner); and quarrelsome grandsons, Aron and Cal (Hart Bochner, Sam Bottoms). Through these men?s lives slithers Cathy (Jane Seymour) -- a she-serpent who holds their love and enmity.

With a cast that includes Lloyd Bridges, Howard Duff, Anne Baxter, and Karen Allen, this saga explores the nature of good and evil, the origin of sin, and the hope of reconciliation. In its ambitious themes, pervasive Biblical allusions, and abiding reverence for the land, East of Eden stands as a timeless American epic.

Winner of an Emmy® for best art direction and Golden Globes® for best miniseries and best actress.

DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE exclusive interview with Jane Seymour, biography of John Steinbeck, and cast filmographies.

Bringing to life the bestselling novel by Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbeck, this TV adaptation faithfully follows the history of the Trask family from the Civil War to World War II. A recreation of the biblical story of Cain and Abel, East of Eden follows estranged half-brothers Adam and Charles (Timothy Bottoms and Bruce Boxleitner) as they reunite after the death of their father, Cyrus (Warren Oates). They live together on their father?s land, constantly quarreling, when they meet the manipulative and beautiful Cathy Ames (Jane Seymour), a prostitute with a dark past. The theme of good versus evil runs rampant throughout and entangles itself in the Trask family legacy through each generation. Jane Seymour?s brilliant portrayal of Cathy through three decades, from young runaway to aging mother, earned her a Golden Globe. Fans of Steinbeck and Seymour alike will be pleased with this retelling which won an Emmy for best art direction and Golden Globe for best miniseries. This three-disc set features a biography on John Steinbeck, exclusive interview with Jane Seymour, and cast filmographies. --Amanda Faddis
