DVD Reviews of Early Edition - The First Season

DVD Review: Choices and what they mean in life
Summary: 5 Stars

The editorial review, and other reviewers have pretty well described the show straight out, so I won't rehash that. Kyle Chandler is a magical non-superman named Gary Hobson... an everyday guy, who continually finds it in himself to stretch beyond what he is. The show is about the choices we make, for better or worse, that affect ourselves and others. While Gary, like most of us, is no saint, he continually opts for his better self in the choices he makes in his contact with others, because he is able to see, via the paper, what the worse outcome could be. Fear, doubt, danger, humiliation, and embarrassment all become secondary to doing the right thing.

So much of what is on TV tends to be juvenile, soap box sermonizing on culturally correct issues, with expected outcomes. This program rises above all that, by making the story about the choices and dilemmas that we face, and how we try to deal with them as best we can, to maintain our dignity as human beings. I await the second and following seasons and hope they will be out soon.

DVD Review: A First-Rate, High Quality Show
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this show when it was first on the air, and after watching it again on DVD for the first time in years, I was struck by how well it still holds up in this decade. In fact, if this show was airing right now, I honestly think it would be the best show on television.

To start, the premise is extremely interesting and original: a Chicago man, Gary Hobson, holds the future in his hand: he mysteriously receives tomorrow's newpaper a day early. He must make many moral decisions as to how he is going to use the paper - for his advantange, or for other peoples' advantage. Of course, for those who really appreciate Kyle Chandler's boyish, innocent looks, we already know he's a good guy in this.

Every episode involves stories in the newspaper, mostly tragic, that Gary must try to fix or prevent. However, such is life, where one thing is often connected to another, be it people or events, and situations are not always what they seem. Many episodes take us through exciting twists and turns, and before we know it, a 40-minute episode is sadly over.

What I love about "Early Edition" is its tremendous heart. I never cry when I watch television and most movies, but I think this show wins in making me tear up with gladness in more than several episodes throughout its four-year run, especially during the first season. Episodes like "The Choice," where Gary must decide who to save from death, "Gun," which shows the devestating effects of a broken-up family, "Hoops," and "Faith," where a young girl helps Gary reevaluate the kind of faith he puts in his paper, are uplifting and helps us believe in a world that still has hope and goodness in it. Sounds cliche, but I'll take a show that celebrates the goodness in people over ones that seem to take joy in showing heartache and violence as a result of the evil people do.

Other episodes such as "His Girl Thursday," "The Wall 1+2," "Psychic," "Phantom at the Opera," and "Love is Blind" are exciting and at times very intense mysteries that showcase the classic "Early Edition" comedy and engaging story lines. Kyle Chandler as the bumbling, kind-hearted, and adorable Gary Hobson, as well as Fisher Stevens (as best buddy Chuck) and Shanesia Davis (as blind friend Marissa), make "Early Edition" one of my favorite series for its high quality stories, humor, performances, and heart-felt messages.

DVD Review: This show should still be on...
Summary: 5 Stars

I have no idea why this show ever when off the air. Kyle Chandler was sweet and wonderful as the reluctant hero. This show had so many possiblitlies, I really feel like it could have gone on for more years. Every show left me feeling good, I rarely didn't have at least one laugh in every show, and there was always a moment were the viewer held their breath as Gary may or may not live to see another paper. What more could you want? I can hardly wait until the rest of these seasons come out on dvd. Let's hope it doesn't go the way of Night Court and we only see this one season put out.

Early Edition - The First Season

Great show to get in a boxset - hasn't dated too badly at all!

Description of Early Edition - The First Season

This is an hour-long drama about Chicago native Gary Hobson who becomes a reluctant hero when his morning newspaper reports tomorrow s headlines. Commodities trader Gary Hobson (Kyle Chandler) is losing it: his job his home and his brilliant attorney wife. He thinks he may even be losing his mind when tomorrow s newspaper mysteriously arrives today giving him a disconcerting look into the future. What will he do with tomorrow s news? While his best friend Chuck (Fisher Stevens) sees the newspaper as a ticket to personal gain co-worker Marissa (Shanesia Davis) convinces Gary that the early edition should be used to better peoples lives. So each day Gary begins anew the struggle to make sense of a world turned upside-down by the changing course of events that come from reading the early edition. Kyle Chandler's thick eyebrows look like they carry the weight of the world in Early Edition, the beloved show about a guy who gets the next day's paper delivered to him by an orange cat. But Gary Hobson (Chandler) doesn't use this insight into the future for personal gain; instead, driven by what must be the world's most overachieving superego, he runs all over town to help people who are about to die or suffer other disasters. He is aided (or sometimes hindered) by his best friend Chuck (Fisher Stevens), who desperately wants to abuse this mysterious gift for wealth and glory, and by Marissa (Shanesia Davis), who acts as Gary's self-appointed conscience, though Gary is so driven he hardly needs one. Marissa pretty much embodies all the cliches of the wise ethnic supporting character (and not only is she African-American, she's blind), but Davis is appealing enough that she somehow makes Marissa engaging. But Early Edition depends on Chandler's charisma, and he manages to enliven good intentions that would make a boy scout roll his eyes. Handsome but modest, Chandler has the combination of underplayed charm and acting chops that can make any show watchable. Though the show rarely lets Gary do more than chafe at the responsibility that's been thrust upon him, Chandler is never less than sincere and compassionate. At its best, Early Edition combines dramatic tension with quiet questions about moral responsibility; at its worst, it comes across like a bizarre fusion of Touched by an Angel and The X-Files, tossing around portentous implications about destiny and a mysterious but clumsy history. Guest stars abound--including Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City), Peri Gilpin (Frasier), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), singer Lou Rawls, and Adrienne Shelly (Waitress)--but extras are disappointingly sparse. For fans of the show, however, this first-season DVD is long overdue. --Bret Fetzer
