DVD Reviews of DresdenDVD Review: Disappointment for a German Production Summary: 1 Stars
Silly and somewhat non-forthcoming, this German production leaves this viewer surprised and disappointed. Not only does the impossible romance drag and push the limits of credibility, the points in the video that are historically accurate, are few and somewhat sanitized.
Historically, my biggest complaint is that it would seem that the UK was the only Allied combatant involved in this bombing. The only indication that the US was involved can be gleaned through the B-17s on the video packaging and the clunky screen menu. Were the producers trying not to offend the US? In actuality, the Americans were just as much involved in the bombing as the Brits. In fact, many consider the follow-up American bombing to be proof the Allies were deliberately doing terror bombing, as the American's bombed the day after the Brits when there was no shelter left in an already flattened city. If that wasn't bad enough, in the real event, a pack of American P-51D American fighter planes came over after the final bombing to strafe civilians. There has been protest for years over this, yet it somehow escaped the attention of this drama. As for the Brits, the movie makes Arthur (Bomber) Harris out to be civil, almost reluctant when addressing concerns from a subordinate questioning the civility of the Dresden targeting orders. Harris passes the blame off to Churchill. This is the same Harris, who has been historically recorded to have been stopped by the police for speeding while on his way to Bomber Command was informed by the British policeman that he could have killed someone. The proud "Bomber Harris" (a name he proudly adorned and arguably created) retorted "Why I kill thousands of people every night".
The romance not only drags through the first disc, but seriously cuts into the unfolding of the bombing on the second disc. This dizzy bomber pilot is shot down and then wanders into a Dresden, not to turn himself in for internment or continue westward to Brits or American lines, but to disguise himself as a German officer, so he will be shot when eventually discovered (?). He then falls madly in love with a German nurse who is about to be married (?). Tough the pilot speaks fluent German, he refuses to utter even one or two word answers for fear someone will recognize his British accent, even though his own mother is from Germany (?). There is a somewhat humorous confrontation due to his when he cornered in an office by a superior German officer. Not only does his superior not question the lieutenant's reasons for being in the private study of their host, but he is surprising satisfied to accept finger pointing to the latrine, never once questioning the Lieutenant's inability to speak when asked multiple questions (apparently, a mute lieutenant). It would seem that after being in Dresden for more that a couple weeks our brave pilot can't seem to utter "ja ja", or "nein" without the slightest accent (?). Obviously, his mother was working a few jobs during his formative years as a youth.
Lastly, were I do give the production its only points was with the historic footage of Dresden before the event and for some portions of the movie's firestorm. This is the only drama I have seen to date that clearly shows the little parachutes with incendiaries falling to earth, along with eerie shots of the sky curtains created by the ordinance being released. The firestorm sequence provided a small sampling of people being sucked into the flames by the fire's vacuum. Still, even this was sanitized from more accurate historic accounts of countless individuals being lifted from their feet and flown one or two blocks before being sucked into the flame. The drama also omits the boiling Elba river that everyone in this film seems to be running towards.
For aviation fanatics, you will be pleased with the new, old and simulated footage of the Avro Lancaster bombers. However, as mentioned earlier, there are no B-17 Flying Fortresses or spotter De Havilland Mosquito's (though there is mention of a "Master Bomber"). Apparently, the Lancasters were doing the work all by themselves in this scenario. Again, the murderous American P-51s have been sanitized out of the film.
Overall, there are good reasons for this video to see considerable discounting. If you know anything at all about the horrendous, uncivilized and inhumane bombing of the city, avoid it. Anyone who likes this film, despises history.
