DVD Reviews of Dreams To Remember: The Legacy of Otis Redding

DVD Review: Inconsequential Piece of Fluff
Summary: 3 Stars

I love the big O. Virtually all the music he created in his short career was exciting and vital. As one of the most influential soul artists of all time, he definitely deserves a documentary. Unfortunately, the only thing I got from this was that he was passionate about his music, which is completely obvious after listening to any of his music for a minute. I don't know if this was completely whitewashed due to his wife's/estate's control over the material, or there was really nothing interesting about his life outside of his music (and no real interesting stories to tell about that either). I'm not a fan of dirt digging, but there must be something that could have given this documentary a little drama. He was an amazing live performer, some of which is shown here, but beware that half or more of these "performances" are (badly) lip-synched tv appearances (as the film acknowledges, since he never sang the same song the same way twice). If you love Otis, you may want to see it, but don't expect much in the way of illumination or excitement.

DVD Review: A MUST MUST MUST have for any Otis fan. Brilliant!
Summary: 5 Stars

A must for any Otis fan....complete performances with editing done very well. Family & friend interviews....Cronological order of songs and explaination/interviews on each song. It is amazing! Tina Turner actually reccommended this to me, it was her inspiration and now mine! Thank you Otis, may you be at peace forever.

DVD Review: Awesome - Go Get it
Summary: 5 Stars

Otis Redding. What a brilliant mind. He left us with some great music and I can only dream of what he would have done if he would have lived past 26 years old.

So most everyone loves his music, but watching him perform on this DVD makes it even more awesome. It sheds a new light on how great he is.

Buy this and enjoy!

DVD Review: Otis Redding: The Definition Of Soul
Summary: 5 Stars

I fell in love with Otis Redding during the summer of 1970, 2 1/2 years after his tragic death. I was 12 years old. In 1967, my sister invited me to the Apollo to see Otis. I declined. At that stage in my life, I didn't want to see anyone but the great Jackie Wilson perform. To this day, I wished I had seen him perform. But, after all, it was a decision that a 9-year-old made. But I sure made up for it during the summer of 1970. I listened to all of his albums--which my sister had purchased after seeing his Apollo concert--incessantly. My favorite two being his live performance in Europe, where he was absolutely revered, and the posthumously released "Dock of the Bay." His Monterrey performance was also a favorite. Rolling Stone called his performance there the best of the festival. A number of years ago, I purchased the video of the Monterrey performance, which featured interviews of many of those interviewed on this DVD. However, more than any other work, Dreams To Remember: The Legacy of Otis Redding, brings Otis to life. It is magical, as it captures the greatest soul singer ever. Hauntingly, when asked about his plans, Otis preferences his answer by saying, "If I am living..." He died shortly afterwards.
Were I to recommend one work to introduce Otis to the world, this would be it. In fact, my sister watched it at my house (my gift to her for turning me on to Otis) and was astonished. An awesome work on a great man.

DVD Review: Wonderful retrospective!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently saw the Otis Redding exhibit at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Macon. This DVD offers full length performances from his concerts and tv appearances through his brilliant career. I especially enjoyed the interviews with Zelma Redding, his widow, and Steve Cropper. I was disappointed that the DVD lacked interview footage of Otis along with biographical information. Other than that, it's great entertainment and a good value. I strongly recommend the "Stax/Volt Revue Live In Norway 1967" DVD as a companion which features Otis in concert with Eddie Floyd, Arthur Conley, Sam & Dave, and Booker T. and the M.G.'s.

Dreams To Remember: The Legacy of Otis Redding features 16 complete performances filmed throughout America and Europe showcasing why Otis is considered one of the greatest soul singers of all time.
