DVD Reviews of Dr. Fuhrman's Secrets to Healthy Cooking DVDDVD Review: Entertaining Healthy Food Prep Basics - NOT RAW Summary: 4 Stars
I do not know how the most helpful review here could have even watched the video and then wrote that review. Clearly the recipes are not raw. Many are cooked. Dr Fuhrman and his wife demonstrate how they make from fresh or fresh frozen ingredients:
Salad Dressings and Dips
Soups & Stews
Bean Burgers
Vegetable Smoothies
Ice Cream & sorbets
They do recommend using nuts over using any type of oil as nuts are a whole food which means they are whole foodists and that is typical of raw food recipes but they use a lot of vinegar in almost every recipe which is a cooked product and not used ever in any authentically raw recipe. They even add vinegar to their frozen fruit sorbets possibly because Dr Fuhrman sells a line of flavored vinegars. Also their bean burgers, soups and stews are cooked on the stove or in the oven at normal temperatures just like typical SAD.
While it appears obvious to viewers that neither dr Fuhrman or wife have had any formal food training, the video is still entertaining to watch as they are both enthusiastic about their diet and comfortably joke around with each other. I like that they offer a basic recipe prototype so that you can choose the ingredients and flavors you like and have variety in your meals. This video would never make it to the food network but could with the health network channel as a documentary of this is how we successfully live on a healthy diet.
I have been eating healthy for 5 decades and preparing healthy meals for 3 decades and didn't learn anything new in this video although I am actively searching to enhance my relationship with food always. At first I thought the way they make soup by putting the entire onion, dark leafy greens, leaks, etc. in your soup whole so you can easily fish them out when cooked and puree them in your Vitamix and then return to the soup was a good tip; but after thinking about it, I changed my mind. while it would make meal preparation faster and easier, the entire onion would not cook uniformly and my palate is sophisticated enough to taste the difference and I would enjoy meals prepared with more attention to detail and with more chef-like expertise. However, I am hoping my 29-year-old son finds it workable for him as he would prefer speed over taste.
Michael (the reviewer rated most helpful on this DVD), the DVD does not instruct how to prepare RAW meals. The authors use vinegar in most recipes which is a cooked product and therefore disqualifies any recipe in which vinegar is an ingredient. Also, the authors clearly state that you use the stove and oven at normal temperatures to cook and bake your bean burgers, stews and soups; this also is not raw. If you prepare these foods the way they are instructed on the DVD, then you are NOT a raw food chef. you can say you are a healthy food chef but RAW chef is not factual nor accurate. If you would like to be a raw chef, just search that and you will find all kinds of books and sites ALL of which will tell you NO VINEGAR! no heating above certain temperatures or cooking! I think you should delete your review as it is an inaccurate review of of Dr Fuhrman's Secrets to Healthy Cooking DVD. Potential customers who read your review will be misled. If they are looking for a raw food video so purchase this based upon your review, they will be disappointed. If they are wanting to not be a raw foodist, they won't purchase this DVD based upon your review and miss out on what Dr fuhrman has to offer and never know that they missed out because you gave inaccurate information in your review. I am not commenting at all about your opinion as everyone has one, but that the facts you convey about the DVD being raw food preparation is the opposite of truthful.
