DVD Review: Calling All Comets

This is a review for the double DVD set of ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK
(1956) and DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK (1957). Both pictures were quickly
made so as to take advantage of what many thought to be a fleeting
musical fad, Rock 'n Roll.
But the best thing about these films now is they sort of preserve
the first flush of enthusiasm brought to the teen public by
that big beat hybryd, rock 'n roll.
IN ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK the real rock/ pop stars are Bill Haley and
the Comets and the Platters although Freddie Bell and the Bell Boys
probably sold some platters but they look more like a lounge act to me.
But Alan Freed's on hand to introduce the Haleymen doing the all time
classic, Rock Around the Clock along with a couple of more rockers.
The story concerns a couple of disillusioned big band vets who stumble
across this new type of popular music along with bands and dancers
who are really able to get people out on the floor, a sight for sore
eyes according to everyone. They all go to the big town for a shot at
the big time which, after a few plot complications, happens to be a network
TV Coast to Coast Rock 'n Roll Jamboree hosted by Alan Freed.
In DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK local parents are worried that Rock 'n Roll's
influence will help turn their teens into juvenile deliquents but with the
help of Alan Freed and singer Arnie Haines, played by Alan Dale, a live
rock 'n roll show proves otherwise.
DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK has more music by Bill Haley and the Comets, along with
The Treniers, performances by "Arnie Haynes" as played by Alan Dale
and best of all, Little Richard and his band for two numbers.
The truth be told, it looks like a lot of these acts if not all of them
are lip synching, but I won't tell if you won't pantomime the news to
anyone else.
Anyway both films are a lot of fun and the music is for the most part, a
delight. Sure, this set is over fifty years old but it's really enjoyable
to watch the beginings of a new style of entertainment get started and
enjoyed.

Don?t Knock The Rock spotlights rock music in its infancy and features some of the genre?s true originals. DJ Freed is credited with inventing the term, "rock n? roll," and Haley was a durable star for over a decade, selling 22 million copies of his hit, "Rock Around the Clock," and helping to establish rock music once and for all. Little Richard had his first bonafide hit, "Tutti Frutti," while making this film, and the film shows this self proclaimed architect of rock and roll at the beginning of his storied career. Rock Around The Clock, is a title based on Bill Haley & His Comets? enormous hit from 1954.
