DVD Reviews of Dilbert - The Complete SeriesDVD Review: Unfunny Summary: 1 StarsI felt compelled to write a review since all the 5-star reviews here led me to purchase this DVD set - and it was just unfunny.
Take the Dilbert cartoons "Build a better life by stealing office supplies" and open it to ANY page and you will laugh.
The Dilbert Principle (his book, including emails from other workers) had me laughing out loud as well. This is not an exaggeration! Great stuff, second only to Build a better life by stealing office supplies.
Over the years, his strips are usually amusing, but sometimes only merit a chuckle or smile, not a laugh. It has to be hard coming up with funny busines insights for 15 years, but Scott Adams does a good job. His strip is still one of the better strips around!
But all the books and comic strips are miles ahead of this TV show. I think someone took a 3 panel comic and tried to make filler between the panels of unfunny dialog and motion such that it became a 22 minute episode. Maybe a 3 panel comic that takes 30 seconds to read is the best way to enjoy Scott Adams.
I actually threw this DVD set in the trash. I tried to watch a few episodes, but could not make it through the whole season.
I would encourage everyone to borrow a friend's set or rent this BEFORE buying it. You will quickly know if this set is for you, or like me, you can't believe how they ruined the Dilbert comic strip.
DVD Review: TV series Summary: 4 StarsThis set is on DVD, and is the TV series back in the late 1990's which ran for 2 seasons.
Good for historical Dilbert.
DVD Review: It had a short lfe, but what a life! Summary: 4 StarsDilbert lasted less than one season. Based upon the popular comic strip it attempted to bring the humor and irony of it to life. Many times it hit the mark, but, there were far too many misses for it to last. This set presents all the episodes filmed and compiled on 4 discs. The picture is clean and the sound well-engineered. The menus are easy to use. What really stands out on these discs is the strength of the voiceactors (real word - I am one) and their devotion to making their characters really come to life. Dilbert fans will really enjoy this set. Others may see it as nothing but an odd cartoon. It's both, really, and that's what makes it ultimately work.
DVD Review: Genius Cut Short Summary: 5 StarsI've always been a big fan of the Dilbert comic strips and remembered that there was a series on UPN way back in the day; so when I found it on amazon I was pretty excited. After I received this product, I finished watching all of the episodes in about two weeks, and thought that they were all quite hilarious and also applicable to life. Scott Adams' knowledge of the business and marketing worlds combines with his broad sense of humor to make a very funny TV series. Adams even manages to poke fun at himself and his BS in Economics, which I find to be a good indicator of good comedy. The only negative thing that can be said about this series (and probably the reason it was canceled) is that Adams' very strong views on politics and religion also come up in more than a few episodes. In a predominantly religious society the very strong atheistic/mystic views portrayed in this series can leave some individuals felling offended.
Overall I think the Dilbert series was absolute comic genius that was cut short before its time. And these DVDs embrace everything that was funny about the original series with both the episodes and the extras put together by Scott Adams.
DVD Review: Good collection. Summary: 3 StarsI was very happy with this TV series and saw it was on DVD. All the episodes are here although I wish there were a few more features to go with them.
Description of Dilbert - The Complete SeriesDilbert - the most popular comic strip of the decade - is now on DVD. With his signature turned-up tie, round glasses and buzz cut, Dilbert is already a pop culture phenomenon, providing an irreverent reference point for workers everywhere. Developed and produced by Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Larry Charles ("Seinfeld," "Mad About You"), DILBERT, the series, follows the "every man" as he copes with daily life at The Company. Developed and produced by Emmy? Award-winning writer/producer Larry Charles ("Seinfeld," "Mad About You"). After being fired from UPN's primetime line-up, this animated series based on Scott Adams's nationally syndicated comic strip has received a well-deserved promotion to DVD. Dilbert, the bespectacled potato-shaped engineer with the upwardly mobile tie, is the poster boy for the corporately disenfranchised. Though Adams's cynical, cubicle eye-view of corporate culture was somewhat co-opted by The Drew Carey Show, animation gives the series a surreal flourish not possible in a live-action series. In the first episode, for example, we can see the devastation wreaked by an "all-natural" anthrax lozenge, and an interoffice riot sparked by budget cuts. Co-executive producer Larry Charles, whose resume includes Seinfeld and Mad About You, wisely preserved Adams's Kafka-esque comic vision. Dilbert may "just want to make the world a better place," but that is difficult in a workplace where the Pointy-Haired Boss insists his employees first come up with a name for an as-yet-undeveloped product, employees literally give their souls to the company, and an evil cat reigns as an evil director of human resources loathe to help employees. As the old saying goes, it's funny because it's true. The voice cast are excellent hires, with Daniel Stern as Dilbert, Larry Miller as the clueless Boss, Kathy Griffin as sardonic co-worker Alice, and Chris Elliot as Dogbert. You don't have to have a refrigerator, cubicle wall, or computer festooned with yellowed Dilbert strips to appreciate the series. It will strike a beleaguered chord in fans of Office Space and The Office, or anyone toiling for a company that loves misery. --Donald Liebenson
