DVD Reviews of Devil Dog; Hound of HellDVD Review: Devil Dog; Hound of Hell Summary: 5 StarsA german shepherd whose hunger for human souls far exceeds that of the normal household pet. Although not above resorting to the usual throat-maulings, the satanic psycho-pup's preferred method of attack is to supernaturally cause the deaths of various friends and neighbors. This movie has enough implied shocks and chills to keep up the pace, particularly with a grueling scene in which Dad finds himself unable to resist the urge to plunge his hand into a spinning lawnmower blade, while the possessed pooch looks on with tongue-wagging. Strong performances from everyone and the suspense makes it worthwhile to watch.
DVD Review: pleased with the film not so pleased with exchange Summary: 5 StarsI remember this movie from when it first came out and I slept with the light on,even as a teenager. The movie arrived with the case broken on the spine and along the top and bottom edge. I promptly wrote in and arranged for a swap of the bad with a new good case. I received a reply that a replacement had been sent out. It is now 3 weeks later and it still has not arrived.
Hopefully, with Amazon's receipt of the broken movie case they will check into the status of the replacement. I requested a tracking and feedback. I won't let this one mistake change my ordering from Amazon in the future.
DVD Review: Surprisingly decent Summary: 3 StarsDevil Dog is really an OK way to spend an hour and a half.
I bought this film in the "Evil Animals" trilogy pack that also includes "Day of the Animals" and "Grizzly", both William Girdler movies. I was reluctant to give "Devil Dog: Hound of Hell" a chance but when I finally did I was pleasantly surprised.
Granted, you have to be a fan of 1970's American horror filmmaking. Add to that this is a TV movie so don't expect any gore here. What you get here is a reasonably suspenseful story (despite the absurd subject matter) that's very well acted by the two leads, especially veteran actor Richard Crenna.
The film does build up a certain amount of creepy atmosphere and that's due to solid direction from Curtis Harrington. Several scenes work remarkably well and generate a decent amount of suspense.
It must be said that budgetary limitations inhibit the film's closing moments. What there is of special effects is pretty horrendous and the finale does disappoint somewhat.
Other than that "Devil Dog; Hound of Hell" is a decent horror film in most respects.
DVD Review: perfect horror experience Summary: 5 StarsOne of the scariest movies of all-time!! I was TOTALLY freaked out when I first watched this movie as a child. There are some scenes in movies such as the Grudge and the Ring that brought back memories of this movie (in fact, those same memories are why I came here and decided to write a review).
Something about the dreary setting and atmosphere of horror films they were making in the late 70's and early 80's really brought out the frightening experience to its ultimate potential, and this is yet another very good example of a horror storyline done right thanks in particular to a dark and dreary setting.
That dog gives me the creeps in ways I can't even explain, and the fact the dog takes over a family (except for the father/husband) really gives the entire experience even MORE of a powerful, uncomfortable thrill. I really believe the level of fear is right up there with the Exorcist.
Totally worth owning and watching over and over again. If you like the Grudge and the Ring, I guarantee there will be a few moments in this movie you will NOT feel comfortable watching with the lights out!!
DVD Review: Still As Good As I Remember It! Summary: 3 StarsI won't go into a film synopsis here. That's just wasting our time. I just want to comment on the quality of the DVD.
Media Blasters/Shriek Show did an outstanding job at cleaning up this flick. Video quality is pristine with vibrant colors throughout. Sound was clear with no noticeable flaws.
However, I will say that there were two scenes which came off as soft and not as crisp as the rest of the movie. I assume that has to do with either a change in film during the shooting of the movie or Media Blasters found additional footage that wasn't up to snuff but was needed to give their consumers an "uncut" flick. Even though they don't state it is uncut. Nevertheless, great job on their part.
Warning: When you open the case, there are supposed to be two discs inside. I didn't see the disc with the movie on it when I opened it. It was hiding under their catalog.
If your remember seeing this as a kid on T.V. and enjoyed it, then don't hesitate to pick it up. It's just as good as it was back then. A bit corny but still enjoyable.
