DVD Reviews of Devdas (2 Disc Set)DVD Review: Not quite what I was expecting, but really great Summary: 5 StarsDevdas is really, really sad. I don't just mean the title character, Devdas, but the entire film. It's beautifully shot and terrifically acted, but it's really, really sad. It reads like one of those Russian romances where everyone dies pitiful deaths, unrequited and miserably alone.
But it is SUCH a beautiful movie. Even the grisly miserable scenes are just gorgeous. And there are some grisly miserable scenes. I'll admit, I didn't know what I was getting into. The Indian movies I'd previously been exposed to were lighthearted romantic comedies with extravagant musical numbers and multiple inexplicable costume changes. I didn't expect high drama and soul-crushing anguish. I'm so glad that I own a copy of this now, since it's a really incredible film, but be warned: it's not a happy movie. Beautifully filmed and performed, but not happy. I'm rather glad that I didn't know quite what to expect, since I was completely blown away by this film.
My copy came in great condition with a separate, fully labeled and official soundtrack disc, something I vastly appreciate since the soundtrack is WONDERFUL.
DVD Review: A milestone in Indian Cinema Summary: 5 StarsDevdas tells the story of unrequited love in the lives of three people entangled with each other in a very melodramatic and poetic fashion.
Dev (ShahRukh Khan) is a rich landlord's son and his neighbour's daughter Parvathi or Paro (Aishwarya Rai) is his love interest from childhood. The story is set in British India times and Dev returns to India from London after his education and falls in love again with the now grownup Parvathi.
Parvathi has a lamp that she never lets die as a symbol of their love.
Following a rift between the two families, Devdas writes a letter asking Paro to forget him and move on and leaves his house vexed. The griefstricken Paro agrees to an arranged marriage after being convinced that Devdas never truly loved her.
Meanwhile Devdas who lives with his friend Chunnibabu is taken to a famous Courtesan's house to watch her dance. As he watches Chandramukhi's(Madhuri Dixit) splendid performance he realises that his love for Paro can never be replaced and goes back home.
He is shocked to see Parvathi married off to another man and takes up drinking to forget Parvathi. Meanwhile the courtesan Chandramukhi who is in love with Devdas takes him under her wing. Though Devdas always treats Chandramukhi with contempt, she faithfully serves him, hoping to one day gain a place in his heart.
Paro learns of Devdas's drinking habit and approaches Chandramukhi to stop his drinking. She learns that Devdas has not visited Chandramukhi either in several months. They become friends and Parvathi invites Chandramukhi to her house for a festival to dance. Things become complicated when Parvathi's family learns that her "friend" Chandramukhi is a prostitute. The story moves on with intense fervour and climaxes at Parvathi's doorstep where a dying Devdas yearns to see Paro for one last time.
This film is India's costliest film made to date with grand sets and costumes with filming and production that went on for a few years. The dances are very beautifully choreographed with both actresses Madhuri and Aishwarya known for their excellent dancing skills outperforming each other in the song Dola Re.
Shahrukh's acting touches one's heart. The dialogues are poetic and very well written.
This movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France and buying this DVD is most defenitly money well invested in art.
DVD Review: great Summary: 4 StarsI love Bollywood movies and I think this is one of the best. I love Aishwarya Rai and Shahrukh Khan.
DVD Review: Excellent ! Summary: 5 StarsExcellen film, really a poem !!
The first time I was told about DEVDAS was in 2003 during my trip to India. At that time I got the CD and the music is so lovely even if one can't understand the lyrics. Now, I have the DVD with the whole story and I think this is a beautiful performance. Don't miss it if possible. This is a love story not like a bad American style.
DVD Review: POOR QUALITY MEDIUM Summary: 1 StarsUnfortunately, this DVD is useless for use with HDTV 50 inches or more. I have a 50 inch TV and played this using a upconverting Bluray player. Picture quality is worthless. You can see each pixel on screen and is the size of a floor tile. You have to walk away from the screen as far as possible to even try to watch it. Very disappointing.
Description of Devdas (2 Disc Set)Starring: SHAH RUKH KHAN, AISHWARYA RAI, MADHURI DIXIT Synopsis: Devdas is the story of a love beyond all else, even life. The saga of a man called Devdas who loved, loved and just loved. Devdas shared a magnetic childhood with his lovely playmate Paro where supreme love was felt before it was understood. When youth beckoned, the loved intensified. But, alas, a fateful moment of weakness on the part of Devdas created a permanent wall of separation between him and his beloved Paro. On one side of the wall was a heartbroken Paro who became the wife of another. And on the other, was a completely shattered Devdas. Unable to bear the agony of a life without Paro, Devdas made alcohol his constant companion. But that could not make him forget the piercing pain. Even the unflinching devotion of a beautiful courtesan Chandramukhi, did not ease the heartache of losing Paro. It was only when his eyes closed to a permanent sleep, did the pain begin to fade. But even before losing the light of life, all Devdas urged was to see his Paro just once, thus giving his love the greatest dignity. It was at Paro's doorstep that the doors of heaven opened for Devdas. He left behind a testimony of true love that was pure, chaste, undemanding...and thus immortal. Indeed, love was his life... love makes him live on. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.
