DVD Reviews of Death Wish

DVD Review: Charles bronson Is the Man.
Summary: 5 Stars

Charles Bronson(R.i.p.) Is the man,in his first deathwish movie, this one, Although it is violent (at least at the time) this movie is a masterpiece just as Eastwood In Dirty Harry and Chuck Norris Flicks, the movie is not for the faint of heart or hippies. There is disturbing parts that I rather had not seen.Overrall Tragic movie.

DVD Review: Good Stuff
Summary: 5 Stars

No need to say anything except it is a good movie, and fun to watch. Bronson was always interesting in his personalization - sort of dry, but intriguing.

DVD Review: Instant Satisfaction
Summary: 5 Stars

I guess by now you could call this movie a "classic." It would meet most definitions. It was so popular when it was released that it spawned a number of sequels, but they just got dumb and dumber. This is one of the most famous "revenge" movies ever made and still stands up today.

"Death Wish" is a very, very simple story and it panders to our base instincts which is probably why it was so successful. Most people want justice, and they want it now....which is what this movie preaches. At the time, the movie was shocking. If it came out today, it wouldn't have nearly the impact. However, the early scene of the mother and daughter raped and killed is still horrifying. That will never change.

The story then slows down as we see the transformation of the husband, from conscientious objector to vigilante. When Charles Bronson hits the streets, the film picks up big-time. The movie also ends on a very satisfying note

DVD Review: Fun, But Not to be Taken Seriously
Summary: 3 Stars

Lots of violence, lots of gore, lots of shooting, and cathartic if you are really into it.
I liked this movie for the variety of weapons and the ambushes the protagonist employs.
Other reviewers would have you believe that virtually all big-city dwellers were victims of violent crime in the 1970s. Crime was higher in that decade, but so were certain demographic markers that had nothing to do with politics or policy.
This film's major impact was to render most white suburbanites terrified to enter large cities, so it was good for suburban sprawl and Republicans.

DVD Review: 3 stars out of 4
Summary: 4 Stars

The Bottom Line:

A dated revenge thriller that still manages to pull its weight, Death Wish is recommended only to people who want to see Charles Bronson gun down street thugs for 100 minutes, for aside from that it doesn't have much to offer.

Description of Death Wish

A new york architect turns vigilante hit man after thugs attack his wife and daughter. Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 08/22/2006 Starring: Charles Bronson William Redfield Run time: 93 minutes Rating: R Director: Michael Winner
This controversial, 1974 drama exploits urban paranoia and presents vigilantism as cathartic release. But it is also a captivating, Everyman-ish story of a New Yorker who goes through a sea change after crime depletes his family, and who runs afoul of the law while taking it into his own hands. Charles Bronson stars as the vengeance-seeking urban warrior who goes on a punk-killing spree after his wife and daughter are attacked by intruders. Director Michael Winner (The Wicked Lady) shamelessly builds upon audience identification with Bronson's rage, but he also makes an interesting story out of the latter's tug-of-war with disapproving police. It's an unpleasant film all around, but not nearly as bad as its horrifying, numerous sequels. Watch for a very young Jeff Goldblum--in this, his second movie--as one of the assailants of Bronson's loved ones. --Tom Keogh
