DVD Reviews of Dead Silence (Unrated Widescreen Edition)

DVD Review: An interesting take on the horror genre.
Summary: 3 Stars

An evil old woman's ghost is haunting a nice little town, except she's making her puppets do her sinister bidding. The puppets do a good job of appearing to be creepy, having said that they are far from intimidating. I don't understand why the human race is scared of things like puppets and porcelain china dolls but we are. The movie isn't all that bloody or gory, but it dos have some being a horror movie and all. Interestingly enough the goriest moments in the movie are the pictures they show depicting what happened to the old lady and her victims in the past. The acting isn't bad, just don't expect anything oscar worthy. Overall the movie isn't very scary, but it might get some cheap jumps out of you.

DVD Review: Not for fans of the late Edgar Bergen and Jeff Dunham.
Summary: 4 Stars

Dead Silence is one scary movie. It kept me up for the most of the night when I first watched it. This film is not for fans of the late Edgar Bergen and Jeff Dunham.

DVD Review: Creep Out More Than Gross Out
Summary: 5 Stars

Maybe I "saw" a different version but the reviewers saying no gore are wrong. The 1st Dead Body was pretty gory Itself. And the Old Mortician got It good when she "Got His Voice" If that tells you anything.
I just had to voice In on this one. In It's genre This IS a 5 star movie and I had to weigh In my vote on this one. Clever, Original, The "Dead Silent" thing going for It. Credible acting and a good ghost story make this my pick of that year. Anybody shopping for a movie for tonight, this weekend. And the few new releases don't Interest you. And your afraid of getting some cheap horribly acted with horrible lines. I'm here to tell you All Rest at Ease Your going to Love this.
Even though It has it's gore It's more creep out than gross out for sure.
And a Phenominal ending!

DVD Review: We Get It: Dolls/Dummies Should Creep Us Out...but they don't
Summary: 3 Stars

The draw of Horror films has always somewhat perplexed me. Why are they so wildly popular? Is it the adrenaline rush you get as you watch the blonde bimbo try to run and despite all her best efforts eventually get mauled? Or perhaps we all long for someone to pop up in the mirror's reflection after we look away for but a moment? Whatever the case the fact is horror movies have a set repertoire of tricks. Dead Silence, granted, uses most of the tricks - but unfortunately it only does so well every once in awhile. No, this film is no example of mastery or ingenuity - but it does cash in on one factor: people are creeped out by ventriloquist dummies. Amen brother.

The story goes as follows: Jamie Ashen (Ryan Kwanten) and his wife Ella (Amber Valletta) receive a late night package containing a rather creepy looking dummy. Well, as can be expected, it's not long before terrrrrrrrrrible things start happening. People start dropping dead left and right and no one has any idea what's going on - except that it has something to do with a dummy. Unfortunately for Jamie, "the dummy did it" is no longer a legally accepted defense and an investigation into his involvement in the brutal tongue stealing killings begins. With Detective Jim Lipton (Donnie Wahlberg) on the case Jamie's time to solve the mystery is running out. As he searches for answers he consults his estranged father Edward Ashen (Bob Gunton) and his cradle-robbed wife Laura only to get one clue: a nursery rhyme.

"Beware the stare of Mary Shaw.

She has no children, only dolls.

If you see her in your dreams,

Be sure you never, ever scream or

She'll rip your tongue out at the seam."

Such cryptic comfort for the young, no? While the story doesn't involve a lot of unexpected plot twists, the ending is rather clever. Beyond that, get ready for a few truckloads of dummies and old hags popping up (un)expectedly and rather suddenly.

The DVD\'s extras include deleted and alternate scenes. The proposed alternate opening is better in my opinion, but the ending was simply too satisfying to change. The rest of the extras are interesting only if you reaallllllly got into the film. The `Evolution of a Visual FX' may be interesting still, since the `dead silent' sequences are somewhat fun to watch and listen to.

As you would expect from a Horror flick - the acting is nothing special and the dialogue...well it only has any snap at all when Wahlberg is on the screen. Beyond that Dead Silence is merely your typical horror fare with dummies. Maybe dummies are your thing. There hasn't been a good dummie movie since the original Chucky flicks (but even then it was hard not too laugh).

DVD Review: Dead Silence
Summary: 4 Stars

This is one of those horror-films that could have been awesome, but instead ends up being "just" being good. The plot goes; Jamie Ashen and his girlfriend one night receive a relatively spooky ventriloquist doll named "Billy" in a crate delivered anonymously at their door. Ashen goes out to get them some food, wondering who sent the doll to them and why. As he returns, he finds his girlfriend dead, missing her tongue. After being released from custody for lack of evidence against him, Ashen travels back to his home town for the funeral and finds out that the doll used to belong to "Mary Shaw", a former fellow townswoman of his. She was murdered by several of the townspeople for what they believed to be her murderous nature back in the day after one of her ventriloquist shows where a boy went missing shortly afterwards heckling Mary Shaw.

The legend is that the ghost of Mary Shaw, along with her dolls, are killing off the townspeople related to her murderers, but only if you scream when you see her. Ashen henceforth attempts to solve the mystery of who is doing the killing and why. That is about as much as I'll say about the plot, but it is a fine film of suspense, with the welcome addition of Donnie Wahlberg in the cast as the detective suspecting Ashen of the murder(s). Sadly, Wahlberg doesn't get much to act with; mostly he is just being a quite foolish detective and shaving his chin. Ryan Kwanten playing Jamie Ashen is perhaps a bit out of his league here, but considering what I've seen from him on the "True Blood"-show, he's probably grown as an actor since this film was made.

The film reminds one in many ways of both "Jeepers Creepers" and "Darkness Falls", so if you liked those, you will probably like this as well. No big flaw in the film, and a quite nice story and a wonderful ending that you probably won't see coming before you sit there going "ahhh, of course" as the end credits pass your eyes. Recommended if you're into the genre, but be aware that it is of course quite violent. The film scared a friend of mine so bad that he had to get the DVD out of the house, if that is anything to go by. 4,5 stars and the added bonus of a more or less all-European cast.

Billy in Dead Silence inevitably recalls other possessed dolls such as those in Devil Doll, but he is an entertaining dummy nonetheless. As a variation on evil-doll films like Child's Play or Puppet Master, Dead Silence stars a dummy who isn't a killer himself but a vehicle for a vengeful ghost. Previously owned by Mary Shaw, a ventiloquist who was murdered by local Ravens Hill villagers for kidnapping a boy to turn him into a human puppet, Billy houses Mary Shaw's spirit while she gets revenge on all those who killed her. Jamie Ashen (Ryan Kwanten) unravels Billy's mystery after Billy is delivered to his door to claim Jamie's wife's life, since she is pregnant with Jamie's son. Mary Shaw aims to obliterate his entire Ashen clan, since they were partially responsible for her death. Plot, from there, teeters on the ridiculous, as Mary (via Billy) rips peoples tongues out left and right. Jamie's futile attempts to stop Shaw's ghost result in his discovering a gruesome secret about his brutal, abusive father. Writer Leigh Whannell and director James Wan, of Saw, made this almost comical film about 101 dummies, all relatives of Billy's, who are slaves to their sadistic creator. With many direct references to '80s horror films, and a soundtrack theme song almost exactly like Phantasm's, Dead Silence's charm banks on its lack of computer-y special effects rather than its originality. Billy's sly violence is creepy but funny, making for a relatively lighthearted horror film that won't traumatize as much as it makes one chuckle. -Trinie Dalton
