DVD Review: A Moving Documentary Students Will Watch

I just finished watching this for the first time and had to choke back tears. As the haunting tones of Emmylou Harris cries out across the concluding image, I swallowed a sob. I am certain that every time I show it in class, I will do have to do it again. Everything about this film is masterfully done; the narrator has a warm, interested tone (unlike the deep-voiced drone that often puts students to sleep); the soundtrack coincides perfectly with the images of the camps and Estelle's artwork; and the cinematography wisely balances still pictures, art, and film reels. The length is also perfect: not too long to be tiring, not too short to leave unanswered questions.
My sophomore English students finished reading Picture Bride: A Novel by Yoshiko Uchida recently, and were fascinated by the little-known history of the Japanese internment camps. They asked eager questions in disbelief of their apple-pie American government. I'm so glad to have found this film; I have no doubt that this riveting documentary will satisfy their awe & inquiries.
