Summary: 4 Stars

Very Good, But Bonus on Disk 2 "Great Natural Wonders of the World" is the best I have ever seen by
David Attenborough and I have all his DVD's

DVD Review: Not as good as some of Attenborough's more recent work
Summary: 4 Stars

As the title suggests, this is a collection of documentaries on specific animals, including leopards, eagles, and whales. Some of the footage is good, some of it clearly dated. However, it doesn't even compare to David Attenborough's later work. "Wildlife Specials" follows a more traditional documentary style of talking about one animal. By contrast, Attenborough's "Life of" series explains entire classes of animals or ecosystems. Also, the later documentaries are shot with HD cameras and the quality is really light years beyond "Wildlife Specials."

In short, if you are looking for one great wildlife documentary, this isn't it. If you love David Attenborough and can't get enough of him, this is worth checking out.

DVD Review: The real story.
Summary: 5 Stars

The thing about David Attenborough is that he makes nature shows into the equivalent of what used to be called a page turner -- he imparts a sense of 'What will happen next?!' In addition to his vast knowledge, world traveler's experience, and enthusiasm, he also lends a sense of drama, characterization, and import. Each creature has a personality, which is brought out. Every bit of nature has a story. Move over, Sopranos. This is the real deal as far as story.

DVD Review: Another David Attenborough must have!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you like David Attenborough (and who does not?)as being THE most expert entertaining naturalist available, plus camera work from the best available crew in the world (BBC), there is no reason whatsoever NOT to buy this DVD. I have them all (also the ones not available in the USA, but can be bought through Amazon UK - you will need a player that is universal) and they give you the best insight in our natural world.

DVD Review: Good value for Wildlife enjoyment
Summary: 5 Stars

This two disc collection is a great value, each disc contains four shows narrated by David Attenborough, so it is not overbearing, and it offers beautiful wildlife pictures unhindered by presenters in the foreground.

DISC ONE contains four 45 min shows : CROCODILE, EAGLE, LEOPARD and POLAR BEAR. DISC TWO contains two 45 min shows HUMPBACK WHALE, WOLF, as well as two bonus programs, an hour show that collects some of nature's GREATEST WILDLIFE SHOWS and a 40 min show on NATURAL WONDERS OF THE WORLD.

The main eight shows have all been on PBS and are professionally done, which makes this two disc set more then worth the $20 price tag. The two bonus shows present many different segments about the animal world. I found the Greatest Wildlife Show to be the most entertaining, a one hour show presenting 12 short segments about various animals doing their most impressive natural activities. I think this is a great set of animal video stories and a worthwhile purchase for animal lovers to enjoy.

Wildlife Specials is a bounty of BBC wildlife documentaries hosted by David Attenborough, who performed similar duties with the fantastic, 1993 Life In the Freezer. Wildlife Specials consists of six outstanding works focusing on different animals in their natural habitats. Eagles shows us a wide variety of the remarkable, predatory bird in North America, Africa, South America, and parts of Europe. Attenborough explains how eagles are designed to be powerful hunters (they can see prey a mile and a half away), have broad wings that let them float on air, and are highly intelligent and cunning. The program's breathtaking photography and editing make one feel as if a viewer's perspective is liberated by being so closely aligned to an eagle's experience. Footage of bald eagles involved in fighting says more about their natural etiquette than about savagery toward one another, and images of eagles attacking all manner of prey--turtles, salmon, deer, flamingoes--is amazing. Leopard is highlighted by infra-red photography capturing the creature's stealth and power hunting in the dark. But there is also exciting material about bushmen in Namibia whose lives have much to do with revering and following the activities of leopards in their part of the world. Evidence of leopards killing our early human ancestors is fascinating, as is an extended scene in which a leopard stalks a baboon. Polar Bear follows the solitary lives of some bears trying to hunt in the frozen tundra at the top of the world. Females herd their young away from grown males who might be in a feisty mood, while white foxes scavenge after the remains of seals hunted by polar bears. Among startling facts learned here is that polar bears can slow their metabolisms way down so as to hold onto body fat and energy that much longer during hard times.

Humpback Whales reveals that the world's largest mammal can migrate 3,500 miles, from Hawaii to Antarctica and down to the equator. Cows and calves are very close for nearly a year before the latter begin to move toward independence, and grown males can either be nice escorts on the migration path or try to scare off youngsters to get at mom for mating purposes. Much of the documentary is concerned with the famous sounds humpbacks make under water--the cries and moans and clickings that scientists don't fully understand yet. Wolf says a hunting wolf is so strong that it can take down another animal 10 times its weight. Wolves are also highly intelligent and elusive, remaining mysterious despite our best efforts to understand them and how they live. Highlights of the show include great footage of a wolf pack hunting a buffalo by wearing it down over several days. Crocodile says that crocodiles have changed little from the age of reptiles, and are the only reptile predator to outlive dinosaurs. Crocodiles control their buoyancy in water by inhaling and exhaling, and are generally designed to survive anywhere in the tropics. They also, astonishingly, colonize new rivers in other parts of the world on their own, traveling through the ocean to new homes. Special features in this two-disc set include the enjoyable "Great Natural Wonders of the World" and "Greatest Wildlife Show On Earth." --Tom Keogh
