DVD Reviews of Dark Angel - The Complete First SeasonDVD Review: Dark Angel - 1st Season Summary: 4 StarsI missed this series when it aired - I just wasn't into sci-fi shows but after catching a few episodes on the Sci-Fi channel, I was interested enough to buy the whole set and I'm glad I did. Dark Angel is an interesting & innovative show featuring a charismatic lead in Jessica Alba whose acting skills I doubted before seeing this series. Is she Oscar or Emmy worthy? - No but her lack of true expression aka "fighter face" works with the character and her skills DID improve in later episodes.
The episodes had a good balance between the drama of "Max" evading capture while searching for her fellow X-5 brothers & sisters and the comedic relief provided by her co-workers at Jam Pony. The writing and pacing of the episodes also drew me in and kept me interested - they never went too "dark" and always had some type of comic relief or side story while never veering too far from the main storyline.
The supporting actors all lend individual touches to liven up the stories but I especially enjoyed the interactions between Alba & Michael Weatherly ("Eyes Only") and Alba & Valerie Rae Miller ("Original Cindy")- I could see the actors building real relationships with each other during the filming and it made their scenes so much more believable. A lot of reviewers have commented on the overuse of slang - it was mildly annoying during the few few episodes but honestly I just got used to it as another "hook" to interest viewers who talked like that during that particular era.
Overall I really enjoyed watching the series at my own pace and wish that it had lasted longer than 2 seasons. I'd highly recommend it to those who like imaginative yet realistic tv series with strong female leads.
DVD Review: It's just a good watch Summary: 5 StarsDark Angel is a good original idea packed full of witty dialogue and fantastic scenery. Not to mention it actually has Jessica Alba when she could still act; that has to be seen by all at least once.
the only thing lacking would be some entertaining extras, can't say I was too impressed with what was given but that's generally not why I'd buy the DVD anyway.
DVD Review: bad Summary: 1 StarsI liked it but that doesnt change the bad acting, awful supporting characters, horrible lines, ect. This show could have been a lot better. While there are a load of things about it i didnt like the one thing that REALLY annoyed me was the characters lines. The characters sound like a bunch of kids pretending they are play fighting. The only one who really sounds (and acts) down to earth is michael weatherly's character. The whole girl power thing really sucked. I like strong female characters but this was a joke. Jessica albas constant threats about beating the crap out of someone gets annoying after a while. Her friend in the series origanal cindy's defining quote is "yeah you better run cuz origanal cuindy just came outa compton on ur @$$," as jessica alba just dispatches a group of 5 200 pound body builders behind her back. She couldn't even take on one (he ran away after seeing albas character take on his partners). All in all if your anything like me your gonna have this in your collection at some point or another but if you like high quality acting and so on, I would watch an episodwe or two before buying.
DVD Review: LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!!!! Summary: 5 StarsSo sad that there wasn't a third season. They got picked for a another season for like a day but then they dropped them. Dumbest move the network made.
DVD Review: Best show that got cancelled Summary: 5 StarsThis show was made before 9-11 about a post 9-11 world. It deals with USA in a depression after terrorist sent up a nucular air pulse that killed all the computers and sent the world back to the dark ages. With crime running out of control our hero Max (the lovely Jessica Alba) is a geniticly enhanced super soilder who escaped from her test lab prison. I still can not forgive Foxfor cancelling this show. BAD FOX! BAD FOX!
Description of Dark Angel - The Complete First SeasonVarious One of TV's more interesting tough-girl action shows, Dark Angel is a distinctive blend of the personal, the adventurous, and the politically aware. Cocreators James Cameron and Charles Eglee present a complex scenario of biological super-science and social collapse in which their gene-manipulated heroine and hacker-journalist hero can genuinely make a difference. In this first season they also provide an adversary who is a lot more than just a conventional villain. Jessica Alba is impressive as Max, bred and trained as a super-soldier but reclaiming her individual humanity; Michael Weatherly is scruffily attractive as Eyes Only, who sits semi-paralyzed in his eyrie above Seattle uncovering crime, corruption, and other skullduggeries and assigning deadly errands to the woman he hopelessly loves. Jon Savage has real authority as Lydeker, a man who has stretched his conscience to the breaking point, but is not personally corrupt. Some of the best episodes--"Prodigy," for example--are ones in which Lydeker and Max are forced into temporary alliance. Early on, the relationship between Max and the other workers at Jam Pony--the courier firm that provides her with a cover identity--is a little forced, but later on the two parts of Max's life are more successfully integrated: "Shorties in Love," for example, is a genuinely touching tale about Diamond, the doomed criminal ex-lover of Max's lesbian roommate. Dark Angel was never a perfect show, but at its occasional best it manages to be simultaneously funny and dramatic. --Roz Kaveney
