I first saw a heavily edited version of "Clancy" on cable TV and liked it enough to buy the DVD, so I could view it uncut.
Clancy is a young girl who is both physically and mentally abused by her drug addict mother who blames her child for everything that has gone wrong in her life. In spite of this, Clancy loves her, and fearing that Social Services will remove her from the home and place her in foster care, she runs away in the hopes that her mother will seek help.
Her first night on her own, Clancy is noticed by a homeless Gulf War veteran. A bit cynical, but with a kind heart, Nick follows her to the park, and as she beds down for the night, he sits a short distance away to protect her. Understanding that he was looking out for her, she begins to follow him. Unwilling to keep a child on the street, he phones a friend in the police department to report the runaway, but before the officer can pick her up, a corrupt mayor, seeking re-election, sees an opportunity for a sensational "rescue", and urges the unsuspecting Nick to look after her a while longer while he puts his plan together.
During this time, a strong bond forms between Clancy and Nick, and he finds himself intrigued by her unshakable faith. As the story unfolds, we learn of Nick's past, how he became homeless, and why he feels unredeemable. The movie culminates in a shocking event that changes everything for both of them.
This movie has a strong Christian theme of faith, trust, and redemption, and as such is refreshingly far removed from the typical realm of Hollywood.
Given half a chance, this movie will pull you in completely. There are no high-tech special effects, no Hollywood hype, and no big name stars. They are not needed. This movie stands on its own merit, and should be viewed at least once by all people of faith. My guess is, you'll probably want to watch it again. Be sure to keep a few tissues handy! An unexpected ending will definitely tug at the heartstrings.
Be sure to watch the "alternate ending". Part of me wishes they had used this as the movie's ending, but it lacks the powerfully emotional impact of the actual ending. I think the alternate was offered to the viewers as a special gift.
