DVD Reviews of Christmas with the KranksDVD Review: Allen and Curtis Skip Christmas in 'Kranks', a Jolly Romp Summary: 4 Stars
"Christmas With The Kranks" is one of the most feel-good movies of the year. It is suprisingly funny, jolly, and charmingly old-fashioned. I have not yet seen the reasoning for all the bad reviews behind this movie. Tim Allen is a great comedy actor, and Jamie Lee Curtis is a great dramatic and comedic actor. The reason I didn't include Allen in on the dramatic acting was...well...did anyone here see "Joe Somebody"? Point being, this movie is quite funny, and, at some points, even mildy profound. For example, Nora Krank (Curtis) is actively involved in many charities with her friends (the seizure inducing Caroline Rhea among them), one of those charities is reading to sick children in the hospital. The plot is simple but endearing. The Kranks daughter, Blair (Julie Gonzalo), leaves for Peru to join the Peace Corps. After seeing her off at the airport, Nora comments that this Christmas won't be the same. And indeed it won't. One night, while Luther (Allen), is shopping for choclate and nuts, he notices a sign for a Carribean cruise line. Luther decides that it would be nice to get out of the rain and take the cruise. Luther pitches this to Nora at dinner the next night. However, since the Kranks spent $6,100 on Christmas the previous year, Luther wants to completely boycott Christmas. Nora does not like this. She still wants to give to the church and hospital, their main charities. At first, Nora says no to not even giving to the hospital and church, that means no more cruise. Then, Luther tells her that that is all they will be donating, and Nora agrees to go with Luther's idea. The next day, Luther prints out a memo telling about his skipping of the whole Christmas season. Nora runs into problems with the stationairy store owner, Aubbie, along with her own closenit group of desperate housewives. Nora and Luther don't care what other people think, and go on with buying the necessary accoutrements.

However, the day before Luther and Nora are slated to leave, Blair calls. From Miami. With her boyfriend Enrique from the Peruvian Jungle. Blair informs her parents that she will be coming home for the holidays. Nora greets the news with a screaming fit of happiness. Luther pouts and moans that the cruise will be ruined. So, after the phone call, Luther and Nora rush around time to plan their famous Christmas Eve party, get a Honey Baked Ham, and make a caremel cream pie, Blairs favorite. There is an underlying theme about how Luther passed down buying a calendar from the police, buying a tree from the boy scouts, and putting up a seven foot Frosty light ficture on the roof. Now, Luther has to do all of those things. And when he buys a tree that has prctically nothing but anything on it, Luther must borrow a tree from neighbor Wes Trogdon. But when the cops see Luther with the tree, the cops pick him up as reenge for not buying a calendar. But the streets big mouth Vic Frohmeyer's(Dan Akroyd) son, Spike (Erik Per Sullivan), tells the cops that he is not stealing the tree, but in fact borrowing it. The cops let him go, and Luther sets out to put up the Frosty, as Nora races to get a ham. But when Luther is putting the Snowman on the roof, he falls. He hangs there by a rope until the cops arrive to cut him down. This causes the whole neighborhood to find out about Blair's return, in turn helping the Krank's plan the return of their daughter and her fiance`e. As the cops go to pick up the kids, they are asked to stall. So Marin fakes a domestic disturbance, but they accidentally find a criminal. This launches a bizarre subplot that was not in the book. However, the subplot does provide for an intense wrap-up. I can think of no other reason that this was in the movie was to create suspense in an otherwise lighthearted comedy. It might also be in the film to pad the running time. However, many things that were in the book aren't in the movie. The frustrating thing, though, is that this is a fairly short movie, and there are only (at least) 20 extra minutes that were either cut from the movie, or not included at all. That would have only made the film 123 minutes, but hey, "National Treasure" was 145 minutes. Anyway, this is a great movie and the Christmas spirit is abundent here.
*Note in Passing: I actually wanted to see "Bridget Jones Edge of Reason", but since I am underage, a ticket tearer with a lazy eye told me to pick another movie. I plan on telling this man off immediately.
