DVD Reviews of Children of Men [Blu-ray]

DVD Review: Not as good as the original
Summary: 1 Stars

I liked the original version of this movie better. It was called "American Cyborg: Steel Warrior" or something like that, it was a poorly made craptastic movie from I'm guessing the 80's. The plot of this thing is almost exactly the same, the only difference is that the older one had cyborgs...which is awesome.

I would give this movie props for the great budget but then again it's actually more boring.

DVD Review: Kee: "I'll call my baby Dylan. It's a girl's name, too."
Summary: 5 Stars

Monday afternoon I had one of those rare movie-watching experiences: a film I'd never heard of that absolutely amazed me. In fact, CHILDREN OF MEN (Japan/USA/UK-2006) is EASILY the best motion picture I've seen this year.

I'm not much of a sci-fi fan and had my doubts, especially during the story's first half-hour, but what came later was so mind-bogglling, so unique, that I won't dare ruin it for anyone who hasn't yet seen this superb work.

It's set in the dystopian world of 2027. The last child to be born was 18 years earlier and no one knows why women can no longer conceive, thus the human race is on the brink of extinction through natural attrition.

Theo (Clive Owen) is hired to escort an illegal to England's coast. Against all odds, the African-born Kee (Clare-Hope Ash?tey) is eight-months pregnant, which makes her the hope of our entire planet. There are some who wish to exploit Kee and others want her dead. Theo and a handful of friends, including eccentric hippe Jasper (Michael Caine) and Theo's ex, Julian (Julianne Moore), are her only chance for escape and safety.

Once the pursuit begins you will witness things you've never seen before, including one inspiring moment in the midst of total chaotic war.

WHAT a movie! I just now bought a copy for my home library.

DVD Review: Concise Reviews
Summary: 4 Stars

The Movie: Taught action thriller that once gets going provides more than enough suspence and twists to hold your interest. Presentation of the bleak not-too-distant future is lushly and expertly rendered enough to appear believable. Capable acting and good direction keep this one a respectable thrill ride. It is unfortunate that this film gets commonly criticised for the same elements offered up and appreciated in other better-known movies. If you're a fan of action and suspense type films do not be discouraged by the few who can't seem to get the obvious over-riding plot.

The DVD: Excellent transfer that, even presented on a 145" screen was extremely sharp and to be honest, does not warrant a bluray edition if you prefer not to spend the extra money. Enough extras to keep those who like that sort of stuff happy. On the audio side, very impressive and realistic surround effects.

DVD Review: a bleek look in the future
Summary: 5 Stars

great performances all around and the special effects are not overdone as in most movies based in the future. One of the best movies overall that have seen in recent years.

DVD Review: Beautifully Crafted Cinematic Masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

This film has been my favorite since I saw it in theaters a few years back. Ever since my love for it has only grown the more times I watch it. This is just a perfect film through and through. The story is gripping, and I'm not even religious. It's extremely well acted, Clive Owen was perfect for the role. The film really shines in the cinematography department. Every shot is like a beautiful photograph. The camera movements are brilliant and the long takes nothing short of amazing. Films don't normally "get me" but this one does every time. The scenes just do something to me other films can't. They did an amazing job of really making you care about these characters. The use of color is awe inspiring. The world is painted like it had been truly destroyed. They didn't go overboard with the sci-fi elements either. You really get a sense of what the world would be like with out the laughter of children.

I strongly recommend this film to anyone. I've showed this to people of all ages and tastes and they've all agreed it's great. I especially recommend this to anyone whose really into film like myself.

Description of Children of Men [Blu-ray]

No children. No future. No hope. In the year 2027, eighteen years since the last baby was born, disillusioned Theo (Clive Owen) becomes an unlikely champion of the human race when he is asked by his former lover (Julianne Moore) to escort a young pregnant woman out of the country as quickly as possible. In a thrilling race against time, Theo will risk everything to deliver the miracle the whole world has been waiting for. Co-starring Michael Caine, filmmaker Alfonso Cuar?n's Children of Men is the powerful film Pete Hammond of Maxim calls "magnificent . a unique and totally original vision."
Presenting a bleak, harrowing, and yet ultimately hopeful vision of humankind's not-too-distant future, Children of Men is a riveting cautionary tale of potential things to come. Set in the crisis-ravaged future of 2027, and based on the atypical 1993 novel by British mystery writer P.D. James, the anxiety-inducing, action-packed story is set in a dystopian England where humanity has become infertile (the last baby was born in 2009), immigration is a crime, refugees (or "fugees") are caged like animals, and the world has been torn apart by nuclear fallout, rampant terrorism, and political rebellion. In this seemingly hopeless landscape of hardscrabble survival, a jaded bureaucrat named Theo (Clive Owen) is drawn into a desperate struggle to deliver Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), the world's only pregnant woman, to a secret group called the Human Project that hopes to discover a cure for global infertility. As they carefully navigate between the battling forces of military police and a pro-immigration insurgency, Theo, Kee, and their secretive allies endure a death-defying ordeal of urban warfare, and director Alfonso Cuaron (with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki) capture the action with you-are-there intensity. There's just enough humor to balance the film's darker content (much of it coming from Michael Caine, as Theo's aging hippie cohort), and although Children of Men glosses over many of the specifics about its sociopolitical worst-case scenario (which includes Julianne Moore in a brief but pivotal role), it's still an immensely satisfying, pulse-pounding vision of a future that represents a frightening extrapolation of early 21st-century history. --Jeff Shannon
