DVD Review: NOT FOR BEGINNERS!!!!

I have been involved in martial arts for 28 years and I have never been more disappointed with a video or DVD purported to offer instruction in martial arts in my entire life. This DVD should have been entitled "Demonstrations of Chen style Lao Jia Yi Lu and Straight Sword" because I could get the same "instruction" from watching the form demonstrated on youtube for free.
There is absolutely NO verbal instruction for ANYTHING, not for Lao Jia Yi Lu, not for the sword, not for basic stances, not even for breathing (!!!) which blew my mind. Anyone who's been to a single tai chi class knows that breathing techniques are a core skill.
Basically, the student is expected to watch the form from several angles and just imitate. If one were in a face to face class, the instructor would not only demonstrate and describe each stance or form, but they would also explain breathing and a multitude of other things, and be able to correct the student's mistakes besides. When creating a DVD, therefore, it is even MORE important to explain at least the basic things in detail, to make up for the lack of face to face nuance that is lost. While one may counter that "It's not wise to learn from a DVD anyway" that does not excuse the lack of proper verbal instruction. So many of the other DVD's put out by YMAA are too great for this to be excused.
As for the music, it was very distracting for me. As one other reviewer here mentioned, there are only two tracks available, the "centering" and "energizing" tracks. The centering track was nothing more than a cycling "waw waw waw" that sounded like a pulsing "spaceship" engine, and the energizing track was some sort of extremely lame version of techno or something. I know it might be cliche, but having no traditional chinese folk music was very annoying.
It is obvious that Master Ren GuangYi knows what he is doing. He is very fluid, a joy to witness...but it was not $35.00 worth of joy.
If you want to learn Chen style and you've never studied tai chi before, then this DVD is NOT for you. If, however, you have extensive experience in some other style of tai chi such as Yang style, Sun, Wu and Hao family styles, and you wish to now study Chen style then you'll probably be OK with this DVD with the audio on mute.
