DVD Reviews of Cheating Death, Stealing Life: The Eddie Guerrero StoryDVD Review: Remembering One Of The Greatest Of This Generation Summary: 5 Stars
I can't even attempt to summerize Eddie Guerrero in a few words because I can't add anything to his legacy & reputation as not only a role model for overcoming dangerous demons & addictions and being proof that anybody can change their life for the better but as an inring competitor with heart & unbelievable ability that made up for his "lack of size" & any other sterotype that would prevent a smaller man from being a World Champion. This is the story of the man who's famously known as "Latino Heat" in Eddie Guerrero.
The documentry begins showing the Guerrero family free & talking about growing up around wrestling in El Paso, TX to the point where Eddie trained in his backyard & wrestled Chavo during the intermission of wrestling shows at 9 years old. The importance of the lowrider to Eddie is touched upon before going into the story behind his relationship with Vickie. How Eddie turned pro at age 16 and the importance of his time in New Japan, ECW, and WCW were talked about before getting into the story behind his car accident and his heavy drug addiction that almost took his live various times. His move to WWE & the "Latino Heat" character were talked about before going into what led to his departure in 2001 & his marriage problems before they went into how he was able turn his entire life around. The story behind the motto of "Lie, Cheat, and Steal" is talked about before the documentry ends on Eddie's crowning moment in winning the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar.
This DVD is Eddie Guerrero's story that was originally put together as a television special for the then-UPN network so the documentry itself is shorter than the normal length however the DVD itself is loaded with extra stories & outtakes such as the history of Gory Guerrero, Eddie fighting (and losing) to a monkey, how the Guerrero family were innovators of wrestling, and the history of Eddie & Chavo as partners. Also hidden are bonus stories of Eddie talking about his tattoo, his first professional match, and Hector Guerrero & Gene Okerland reflecting on the Goobley Gooker's debut at Survivor Series '90 along with the highlight packages of the buildup leading into his matches against Dean Malenko, Survivor Series triple threat, and vs. Brock Lesnar. Other bonus materials include 3 music videos, all the Los Guerreros vignettes, footage of J.B.L. giving Eddie's mom a heart attack, behind the scenes of the YJ Stinger ads along with the adds in both english & spanish, a look at Eddie on the cover of Low Rider magazine, his Outside The Ropes feature from Confidental, and a special look at his WrestleMania XX match.
Bonus Matches Include:
vs. Dean Malenko - This was not only their final match in their "Guerrero-Malekno" classic series but also their final match in ECW. This was also a 2 out of 3 match that honestly was perfectly booked & both men recieved a sendoff that any wrestler in the world would want. The match itself can't be put into words as it showcased why Dean & Eddie are classified as two of the greatest wrestlers at that time.
Highlights of the alternative commentary between Eddie & Dean features talks about the ECW enviroment, the difference between each other now & then, their feelings heading towards WCW at the time, and a few jokes at each others expense.
(ECW Hardcore TV)
[Also available on "ECW: Path Of Destruction"]
vs. WCW Crusierweight Champion Chris Jericho - For the longest time, this was a "lost classic" that kept getting overshadowed by the later crusierweight series of matches with Rey Mysterio but this was the defination of what the crusierweight division was in it's prime...fast paced high impact action with great inring mat wrestling wrestling & high flyin'. Again, a lost classic that finally gets the justice it deserves.
(WCW Fall Brawl '97)
Mask vs. Title: WCW Crusierweight Championship vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. - Most peopel concider this the best match in WCW crusierweight history. The storytelling here was right on point with Eddie going after Rey's mask from time to time while showcasing the high flyin' & ground based lucha libre style. Classic match, no questions asked.
Highlights from the alternative commentary with Rey & Eddie include the history behind the mask, the backstage problems with Eric Bischoff before the match, and both men's past in Mexico.
(WCW Halloween Havoc '97)
[Also available on both Rey Mysterio DVD's "619" & "Biggest Little Man"]
Hair Match vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr. - Before this, you get a bonus "match" with Chavo vs. Stevie Ray from Harlem Heat. This was Eddie & Chavo's best match as Chavo was playing mind games with Eddie throughout this competitive match with both men stealing each others finishers at times.
(WCW Bash At The Beach '98)
Ladder Match: WWE Intercontinental Championship vs. Rob Van Dam - This match had a style of both of them using the ladder to make their normal moves more high impact and was without a doubt one of the best matches on WWE TV for that year.
Highlights of the alternative commentary with Eddie Guerrero & RVD featured RVD's most inspirational wrestlers along with both men comparing their own frog splashes.
("WWE RAW" May '02)
[Also available on "The Ladder Match"]
with Chavo Guerrero vs. WWE Tag Team Champions Edge & Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle - Without a doubt, match of the year for me. Very similar to the earlier crusierweight match with Jericho except it was a triple threat tag team match that defines the words "wrestling clinic" by all six men.
(Survivor Series '02)
WWE United States Championship Tournament Finals vs. Chris Benoit - Just like any other time they have gotten into the ring, this was a wrestling at it's finest here between both men with, of course, Eddie putting his own little twist on things with his comedic moments at times. This was one of those matches that was so good, not even the ending took away from it.
(Vengeance '03)
vs. WWE Champion Brock Lesnar - Both men clicked & put on a great mat-based wrestling match with Brock just not being able to beat Eddie no matter what he throws at him to the point where's yelling "Just Die Eddie!". It's too bad Brock leaves a month later because I wanted to see a rematch between these two later on. Eddie didn't look inferior of the Lesnar & Goldberg's cameo didn't take away from the end result of Eddie winning the championship & going straight into the people to celebrate. Eddie Guerrero finally won the big one.
(WWE No Way Out '04)
[Also available on Eddie Guerrero's "Viva La Raza"]
Other matches include a six man tag featuring the Guerrero family (Hector, Chavo, Mando Guerrero) & a young Cactus Jack along with a match from the AAA "When Worlds Collide" PPV featuring Guerrero teaming with Art Barr vs. Octagon & El Hijo Santo.
In the end, this was a fitting celebration of the career for Eddie Guerrero at that time. WWE has later released a 3 disc set full of more matches throughout his career but this is a perfect counterpiece to it as you won't get the entire story of Eddie Guerrero without both disc so this is one that should definatly be added to your collection if it isn't already there. We Miss You Eddy.

A near-death experience in a car crash should have been a warning sign that his lifestyle was out of control.
