DVD Review: Celtic Woman - Beautiful DVD

I had fallen in love with these songs while listening to the CD for awhile, but watching these songs being performed on DVD adds a whole new dimension to the music. These ladies are each fantastic musicians, and the production and orchestration of the actual live concert was top notch. If you like this type of music, BUY THIS DVD.
Now, I have read other comments here complaining about the music being lip-sync'd on the DVD, and find that I must comment on this. I have done audio/visual production work at live concerts, and now specialize in recording live events as they take place. In my professional opinion, what you are seeing on this DVD is NOT lip-sync (where the performers act like they are singing while listening to their voices which have been previously recorded). The video images you are watching on the DVD were taken from the live performance, where the ladies were really singing to the live music (not recorded earlier). I'm sure the live front-of-house audio mix was very challenging for the audio engineers to re-create a nicely-mixed live sound for the folks who attended this concert.
However, in my opinion, most of the audio on the DVD did not actually come from the audio recorded with the video at the concert. Remember, audio and video are recorded separately, not like a camcorder which records them together. If you noticed, the music on the CD was recorded in several studios (except for the 2 live numbers on the CD which came from the concert). The same orchestra, drummers, choir, etc were used to record the CD. In my professional opinion, the music recorded in the studios for the CD was used to make the DVD, in order to provide a much cleaner and noise-free audio for the DVD. So, the task of matching the singers' mouth movements with the audio being heard on the DVD belongs to the folks who edited all of the video footage taken at the live concert to match the recorded music for the CD. The audio is edited onto the DVD timeline first, and then the video is pieced on top of the audio to match it. Non-linear editing software can "stretch" or "smoosh" the video to match the audio track, and it takes some talent for the video editor to get this exactly matched. To prove this to myself, I played a track from both the DVD and the CD on my professional equipment at the same time, and found that the timing marks (called "frames") match.
If you didn't understand anything I just said, let me summarize. In my opinion, what you are getting on this DVD is the audio recorded for the CD (better sound quality than using the audio from the live performance), along with video scenes taken at the live performance, all carefully edited into a highly-enjoyable viewing experience. What more could you possibly want?

CELTIC WOMAN - DVD MovieGorgeous to listen to and gorgeous to look at, Celtic Woman is perfect PBS fare, sort of a Riverdance without the dancing. Drawing on the same New Age-y sound and propulsive energy as that show's solo-voice and choral numbers, the live concert features four attractive young women in strapless evening gowns with soaring voices backed by an orchestra, an Anuna-like chorus, and a large percussion section. The more traditional fare includes Méav Ni Mhaolchatha's "Danny Boy" and "She Moved Through the Fair," and Chloë Agnew's "Ave Maria" (the Bach-Gounod version). Movie and TV selections range from Agnew's "Walking in the Air" (The Snowman) and "Someday" (Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame) to Lisa Kelly's "May It Be" (the Enya song from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the King) and Órla Fallon's voice and harp rendition of "Harry's Game." A fifth woman, Máiréad Nesbitt, adds some variety by fiddling "The Butterfly" and "Ashokan Farewell" (best known as the theme from Ken Burns's The Civil War). Occasionally the singers join together, as in Enya's "Orinoco Flow," an a cappella rendition of West Side Story's "Somewhere," music director David Downes's composition "One World," and a stately version of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Celtic Woman was created by Downes (like many of the other performers, a Riverdance veteran) along with Sharon Browne and Dave Kavanagh of the Celtic Collections record label. --David Horiuchi
