Story - (Rating 5/5)
Brother Justin Crowe and Ben Hawkins are set to cross paths this season. Brother Justin draws in crowds to his temple with his words as Ben searches for his father Hack Scudder. Their mission soon becomes one, but finding Scudder proves to be more difficult than ever. Ben confides in Samson and reluctanly agrees to help bring Scudder to him. Meanwhile, Brother Justin summons his own help to locate Scudder and fulfill his destiny. He sees in his vision that he is the Usher [of Destruction] and tattoos the tree on his chest, thereby becoming the Usher in his visions, and with the lost Gospel of Matthias, he tries to understand his place in the world. Ben finally finds Scudder in Damascus while running into Justin's apostle Stroud, but is able to shake dust back to the Carnivale, but not without being followed. Management and Scudder cross paths a final time and Ben is forced to kill Management to protect his father. Upon doing so, he becomes the Prophet and the Avataric blood passes to his line and it is now soley up to him to stop the Usher. Scudder is then taken captive by Stroud and returned to Brother Justin, who takes Scudder's head and becomes the dark prophet. When Ben learns of the Brother Justin's location, the Carnivàle heads to Mintern, California and the confrontational battle between Justin and Ben comes to an end outside the camp, in the corn fields, or so it seems.

Video: HBO is known for its high quality DVD treatment of their shows. This is no different, and like the first season, these DVDs contain an excellent quality progressive image with no noise or dirt to speak of, and with excellent color reproduction, preserving the dark and brown color palette of the show. HBO even goes to the trouble of putting Superbit to shame with their high bit rate encoding of usually 8.5 Mbps.
Audio: The DVD contains a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround as well as a Dolby Surround Stereo 2.0 soundtrack in English and French. Amazon.com does not list 5.1 and neither does HBO, but I just got my package and there it is. It sounds great!

Description of Carnivale: The Complete Second SeasonCARNIVALE:SECOND SEASON - DVD Movie The second season of HBO's Depression-era gothic--John Steinbeck by way of Tod Browning--picks up where the first left off. Professor Lodz (Patrick Bauchau) is dead. Ben (Nick Stahl), the show's protagonist, appears to be the culprit. Samson (Michael J. Anderson) helps him dispose of the body. Later he tells the other carnival workers that Lodz "took a powder." Lila (Debra Christofferson) doesn't buy it. Meanwhile, Sophie (Clea DuVall), who lost her mother to fire the previous year, feels unmoored without her guidance. A few states away, Brother Justin (Clancy Brown) harbors ever greater delusions of grandeur--and inappropriate thoughts about his sister, Iris (Amy Madigan). In "Alamagordo, NM," he decides to establish a temple, which he dubs Jonestown, er, Jericho. At the same time, life amongst the carnies, who are heading towards Justin's California, is becoming increasingly tense. Ruthie (Adrienne Barbeau), for instance, is starting to see dead people--like Lodz--and Stumpy (Toby Huss) is no longer able to keep his gambling in check. As with the first season, the action continues to alternate between the carnival and the congregation. What binds the two is a man named Scudder (John Savage), who has connections to Ben and Justin. Although writer/creator Dan Knauf had planned to tie things up between seasons three and six, HBO did not renew Carnivāle a second time. Nonetheless, a surprising number of questions are answered, like the identity of "Management" (voiced by an un-credited Linda Hunt) and whether Ben and Justin will have a final showdown. The answer to the latter question is: Yes, they will--and there?ll be casualties. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
