DVD Reviews of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Special Edition)

DVD Review: Bonnie & Clyde Mach 2 But Still Very Good!
Summary: 4 Stars

This film comes closely along the heels of the seminal "Bonnie & Clyde" which was disturbing at the time to audiences for the graphic and gratuitous violence but that film paved the way for future films such as this one and even "The Godfather" to follow years later. The similarities to "Bonnie & Clyde" are very striking and so I'll only mention a few of the obvious ones and you can see if you can spot any more for yourself: a dynamic duo of crime, fugitives from justice constantly running but with time to spend on leisure activities e.g. at the brothel for one or at the beach with family for the other, both wanting to "go straight" eventually but not knowing how and hence failing at the ultimate cost, both ending up in a ridiculously overkill hail of bullets ala using a sledgehammer to kill an ant and great acting among the key cast for both films.

Although this film borrows heavily from "Bonnie and Clyde" in terms of the style and theme, it is still a very good film in its own right. As a fan of good music, I was very impressed by the great Burt Bacharach score and with "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", this film started a precedent of its own in using "modern" pop music in a bygone era setting although I guess "Cat Ballou" just before this could claim the same thing. The effect isn't as bad though as say the recent "First Knight" which used rock music as the score for a film about knights from the Middle Ages which totally threw me off.

This dvd is quite well put together as the picture quality is quite good although the THX mastering is wasted on the Mono soundtrack provided and I hope the Blu-ray version that has just been released at least has Dolby Digital or otherwise 5.1 Surround Sound options in addition to a picture quality clean up. The Making of documentary among the special features though was quite good and a nice touch for the dvd.

Although not very original and too much like a "Bonnie & Clyde" clone or wannabe, this film is still very enjoyable to watch with a good blend of humour, action, drama and tragedy at the end. In any case, although I despise copycats, I still found myself enjoying this film a lot more than I did "Bonnie & Clyde".

Recommended although you should get the remastered and improved picture and sound quality of the Blu-ray version. However, this dvd is still pretty good as far as standard formats go.

DVD Review: Butch Cassidy CD
Summary: 5 Stars

This cd soundtrack was in great condition and I received it promptly upon payment! I needed it for a project, and am very satisfied at the response from the seller. There is nothing that I would have wanted differently. Thank you so much!

DVD Review: Great scenery but not timeless
Summary: 3 Stars

This is one of those odd films that was pretty great at its release but failed to weather the test of time. It's about two bandits (and a gal), who travel the west, and ultimately to Bolivia, robbing banks. Their big thing is to not kill anyone.

It's a bit of a love story and, for me, that was the superior facet of the movie.

If you saw this film when it was released, and re-watch it now, it's a bit of a disappointment. The director relied heavily upon cliche-type material and that is the chief failing of the work.

I will comment that the cinematography is just excellent, which makes the movie still somewhat enjoyable to watch. But it's not at all a film that most western fans will savour.

It's great to order from Amazon. I don't have to waste gas going all over town looking for a rare movie that most stores don't have in stock.
Thank you.

DVD Review: A Brilliant Tale of the Wild Frontier
Summary: 5 Stars

Probably one of the best westerns ever made, this movie mixes the elements of laughter and tragedy just as real life deals them to almost all of us. the result: a story we all can relate to...one that inspires our imagination and puts us right there with the two young men who just can't play the game of life the way that society demands. Made at the height of the Age of Aquarius, this movie works a major miracle of those times: it manages to tell an authentic tale of two buddies thumbing their nose at society without making their natural enemies cardboard stereotypes that so abounded in the cinema of those days. Absolutely first rate performances are turned in by Newman and Redford, while the supporting cast of gang members, a loyal harriman clerk, a Bolivan mine paymaster, an understanding sheriff [whose dialogue nicely calibrates for anyone not otherwise picking it up how far the loveable villians' conduct is strayng from expected social norms] and a girlfriend never lets them down. For fellow Aquarians there is a delightful Vietnamesque sequence where the sheriff is trying to raise a posse. [Remember we Aquarians were raised on cowboy shows where the whole town rushed to volunteer...for us this sequence brought our own life experences with that war into a very familiar western sequence and we gave it appreciative, hearty laughter in the theaters]. terrific humor, magnificent scenery, nailbiting action and the inevitable Age of Aquarius social commentary all combine to give this movie five stars in any era! See what some of the audience was up to in the year this was made.Crossroads: 1969The Brothers K
