DVD Reviews of Burnt Offerings

DVD Review: The House that Kills
Summary: 5 Stars

"Burnt Offerings" is one of a kind, and a true stand out when it comes to horror films and psychological thrillers within the film medium. When compared to other classics such as "The Shining", "Burnt Offerings" also contains just as much classical terror and thrills with a very unique, addicting, compelling, and mind blowing thrill ride worth every minute of the viewing time. The atmosphere, the pacing, and the overall mystery of the setting builds up to a dramatic story with twists at every turn.

The film begins by showing us the Rolf family, a typical three member family that consists of the mother (Marian), the father (Ben), and their son (David). The family is looking for a home to rent in which they plan to spend the summer at. After reading an advertisement for a beautiful home owned by the Allardyce family, the three decide to look into the proposition in person, in order to view the home for themselves. Upon inspecting the home, the two Allardyce siblings state that they can give the family an unbelievably low rental fee for the entire summer, under one condition, that they agree to care for the elderly woman who resides within the attic of the home.

After thoughtfully considering the Allardyce's offer, Ben and Marian decide to partake in the incredible deal, and shortly afterwards they begin their trip back to the home for the summer. Accompanied by Ben's elderly aunt, Elizabeth, the family arrives at the home. To their surprise the two siblings who showed the family the home a few days ago have suddenly disappeared. A note is attached to the door with a set of keys for the home stating that the siblings had to leave earlier than they intentionally intended, but that the home is free for the Rolf family to have all summer long.

The Rolf family begins to enjoy the pleasures that the house has to offer, including a fully loaded pantry, and an outdoor swimming pool. However, it seems like if the house could use a lot of work, seeing how many of the objects within the home are not functioning as intended, and the plants are all dying as well. Marian becomes obsessed with the home, and she constantly cleans it night and day, while routinely checking in on the elderly Mrs. Allardyce who never comes out of her isolation within her bedroom.

After several weeks, it appears as if the house is beginning to feed off of the family. Psychologically, the Rolf family begins to fall apart. From Ben's sudden explosion of anger, and Elizabeth's loss of memory, to Marian's continuous obsession of the home, everyone is no longer acting like themselves. The house has changed everyone, and it slowly begins to terrorize all of them in increasingly violent manners. It appears as if there is no escape, and the house refuses to let the Rolf family leave.

The pacing allows the viewer to see the slow mutation of each family member's mind, slowly being corrupted by the house. With each day that passes, the home becomes more lively and vibrant. Plants begin to grow once again, clocks are fixed, and lights are now functioning. However, during all of this, Mrs. Allardyce still remains unseen, hidden away in the attic, where only Marian is allowed to enter. The truth behind both the home and Mrs. Allardyce is sure to shock the viewer with the intense conclusion.

The story is interesting and does a magnificent job of pulling in the viewer. If the viewer provides his/her full undivided attention, the story is sure to make more sense, and subtle hints here and there can be picked up throughout the film regarding the various occurrences within the home throughout the film. With a creepy environment, and shocking scenes, "Burnt Offerings" stands on its own to deliver a truly suspenseful and well done horror experience similar to other classics including "The Amityville Horror" as well as "The Shining". The slow progression of darkness, evil, and insanity builds up nicely in the same manner as within these other two classics. What is the truth behind the mansion and old Mrs. Allardyce? Only the ending will reveal these facts to the viewer.

Description of Burnt Offerings

BURNT OFFERINGS - DVD Movie
Based on the Robert Marasco novel of the same name, Dan Curtis's eerie movie puts a spin on celluloid haunted-house sagas. The well-adjusted Rolf family (father Oliver Reed, mother Karen Black, aunt Bette Davis, and young son Lee H. Montgomery) rent a huge old summer house only to find that its spirit is in control of the estate. The requisite sinister proceedings appear--including a possessed pool and the vision of a sinister hearse driver following Reed--that disrupt the family's unity. Black also falls under the spell of an elderly woman whom she is required to take care of, but no one ever sees. While it may not be as overtly shocking as other ghost tales, Burnt Offerings has a creepiness that gets under your skin thanks to good performances and the dreamy, soft-focus photography. --Bryan Reesman
