DVD Reviews of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Sixth Season

DVD Review: Classic Joss Whedon and Buffy Show(tunes)
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD is everything as expected for Joss Whedon/Buffy Fans. This season has the musical episode in it which I think was just incredibly creative and fun.

DVD Review: Life is the "big bad" in this season
Summary: 3 Stars

I am not going to lie, this is a HARD season to get through. This season is devided into two halves, with Giles, without Giles. Giles decided that Buffy was to depended on him so he does what he's been threathing to do since season 4, Go back to England. Everyone is going through thier own personal problems. Buffy was pulled out of Heaven by Williow and some very confussed and reluncted "scobbies". The whole season is then her dealing with this trumantic event. She enters into a odd sexual relationship with Spike, she start working at a hamburger place, and she is almost depressed at times. Xander and Anya actually make it to their wedding day(which, I was shocked at, being a Joss fan...no couple is ever happy for long) But of course Xander get cold feet and tell Anya the old "it's not you, it's me" right before they are going to marry. Dawn...wow, what a brat she is in this season. If I was Buffy, I would have summon Glory and gave to her. Buffy is now motherless, just coming back from the dead, her friends are going nuts and she out stealing stuff to get attention. Grow up, litte girl. Spike is very confussed as to what he wants to be and how much he willing to give up for Buffy and her love. Spike wants to be good, but he also wants to be bad. He sleeps with a very confussed and lifeless Buffy, hoping that she will love him back. When, she stops sleeping with during the middle of the season, he gets angry and does some stuff to try to forget and even hurt Buffy. Heres comes the sleeping with Anya and the attemped rape. I am Buffy and Spike fan, but "seeing red" is a VERY hard esp. to get through. It all boils down to Spike going to africa to get back his soul. On to the star of the seaon "crazy Williow" and Tara. The first esp. Williow kills a baby deer to get something she need to bring Buffy back, and she doesn't even loss sleep over it. This is the first clue that Williow is going to become additive to magic. It almost like someone one on drugs, its a lot of..."I swear, I quit tommrow." Tara, who I think is the only normal one this season starts to see this, and leave Williow. After almost getting Dawn killed, Buffy tells her to get help of leave. Williow quits cold turkey and even back together with Tara. The three dorks(jonthan, andrew and warren) try to become "supervillians" and it all leads down to Tara and Buffy getting shot at by Warren. Guess which one dies,...you guessed it Tara. Poor Tara is left dead on the floor while Williow goes nuts. This sends Willow completely over the edge and not only does she go after Warren, but also her friends and ANYONE who come into her path. This seaon lost of lot of the humor which is what I liked about Buffy. Also, I really missed Giles when he was gone. When Giles leave, the show really gets dark because know one can tell them that this is wrong. It a good season, just really dark. Stand out episode areTabula Rasa, Smashed, Wreaked, Dead thing, Hells bell and Grave.

DVD Review: Cancelled twice by 2 networks not a good buy or watch
Summary: 1 Stars

Buffy was another show that started out hot but soon lost its way and eventually was cancelled not once but twice by 2 different networks. The show had awful plots, terrible acting and just plain bad. Sarah Michelle Gellar was the only saving grace but im sure she saw the writing on the wall here. Dont waste your money on this collection it will bore you to tears and it will be hours of your life youll never get back

DVD Review: Transitions are not always smooth
Summary: 5 Stars

This is, in my opinion, the darkest season. The characters each face the worst in themselves and none of them do it well. If you like your heros to be human, with flaws and foibles, then this season will satisfy. Me, I like to see faceted characters. I will confess that when I first watched this season on television with my then adolescent son sitting next to me some of the scenes were a little too intense for my comfort. Even shocking. Especially when I recall that BtVS came on at 8pm.

As for the overall story arch, it is clear that this season is meant to lead into the next and ultimately final season. Not necessarily the best season but interesting and intense and superior to most of the fluff you see on network television today.

DVD Review: Buffy Rocks My Socks
Summary: 5 Stars

I have nothing bad to say about Buffy every season brings me back wanting more of the blonde haired demon slayer.

Description of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Sixth Season

Elated with having Buffy back from the dead, her friends never wonder if she may have been in a better place. Only Spike knows the truth and as Buffy struggles to readjust to life, she begins a relationship with Spike that torments her as much as it brings her fleeting comfort. Yet even as Buffy fears that the magic that brought her back has somehow changed her, Willow's growing reliance on magic is an addiction she can barely control - and one that threatens everyone.
The sixth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed the logic of plot and character development into some gloomy places. The year begins with Buffy being raised from the dead by the friends who miss her, but who fail to understand that a sacrifice taken back is a sacrifice negated. Dragged out of what she believes to have been heavenly bliss, she finds herself "going through the motions" and entering into a relationship with the evil, besotted vampire Spike just to force her emotions. Willow becomes ever more caught up in the temptations of magic; Xander and Anya move towards marriage without ever discussing their reservations; Giles feels he is standing in the way of Buffy's adult independence; Dawn feels neglected. What none of them need is a menace that is, at this point, simply annoying--three high school contemporaries who have turned their hand to magical and high-tech villainy. Added to this is a hungry ghost, an invisibility ray, an amnesia spell and a song-and-dance demon (who acts as rationale for the incomparable musical episode "Once More, with Feeling").

This is a year in which chickens come home to roost: everything from the villainy of the three geeks to Xander's doubts about marriage come to a head, often--as in the case of the impressive wedding episode--through wildly dark humor. The estrangement of the characters from each other--a well-observed portrait of what happens to college pals in their early 20s--comes to a shocking head with the death of a major character and that death's apocalyptic consequences. The series ends on a consoling note which it has, by that point and in spite of imperfections, entirely earned. --Roz Kaveney
