DVD Review: A Near Classic
Summary: 4 Stars

BOYCOTT (2001) Directed by Clark Johnson.

Starring Jeffrey Wright (as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr), Terrance
Howard (as Ralph Abernathy), Carmen Ejogo (as Coretta Scott King), Iris
Little Thomas (as Rosa Parks) and Erik Dellums as Bayard Rustin.

The story of the 1954-5 Montgomery, Alabama Bus Boycott by the Blacks
of that city in protest against the company's discriminatory practices.
The boycott is considered the beginning of the Civil Right Movement and
first brought into prominence as leader the Reverend Martin Luther
King. Jr.
Unlike most HBO historical efforts, one is very pleased to report that
this is a near perfect dramatization of a pivotal event in the 1950s
and United States history. While there are some quibbles---which will
be noted in a bit---it appears that someone prevented HBO from ruining
things with their usual anti-American leftist poisonous rubbish and
thus miraculously a solid historical film was produced from a generally
dubious source. Since this IS a HBO production, it is shown King
receiving bad advice from his friends, family and associates until an
ex-communist homosexual shows up to set him straight. However since
said commie Gay is played superbly by Dellums who smokes up a storm in
an oddly non-smoking 1955 world, it was hard to be too annoyed at the
ever racist liberal idea that Blacks---even Martin Luther King--- are
helpless without The Party to explain it all to them in nice easy
phrases. Also Thomas' performance as Rosa Parks is a creepy mistake.
One kept expecting the glaze eyed fanatical looking actress to reach
into her handbag, pull out a large butcher knife, start shrieking "I
will get you my pretty." and begin slashing away. If this is accurate
portrayal of Parks--which one hopes not--- no wonder they kept her in
the background and had King be the front man
Another mistake is the director's tendency to have crowds of Blacks
staring into the camera. It IS intended to be accusatory towards the
presumably white viewers but the effect is to make them look like a mob
about to kill the first honky they see. The smugness quotient in these
scenes is a little too high and will probably become more noticeable to
the film's detriment as it ages. There is also a poor scene near the
end with King walking in the modern world and getting down with some
brothers apparently sending the message that King speaks to the Black
youth of if they have not figured out his
gigantic importance by this point in the picture, they certainly are
not going to be persuaded by a couple of high fives. It is rather sad
that such a scene was even thought necessary.
However the above are, as said, just quibbles. Minor bumps on a
generally pleasing freedom ride. The photography, sets, costumes and
period feel are well night perfect. Johnson's direction is mostly
inspired. The performances are........Thomas being the
exception.....perfect. Wright is particularly fine as King. Truly an
iconic piece of acting that one sees all too rarely these days.
This film, along with the miniseries KING, are the definitive works on
the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. All that can be said cinematically
about the man has now been said. They are both that good.

Highly recommended.
