DVD Review: this is not deepa mehta at her best

AFTER VIEWING EARTH AND FIRE WHICH WERE BOTH SUPERB. WITH THERE AMAZING ACTING AND EQUALLY AMAZING MEANINGFUL SCRIPTS. I HELD A CERTAIN EXPECTATION FROM THE TALENTED ACCLAIMED DIRECTOR DEEPA MEHTA , HOWEVER I WAS LET DOWN AFTER LEAVING THE CINEMA I WONDERED WHAT A TALENTED DIRECTOR LIKE DEEPA MEHTA WAS DOING MAKING A FILM LIKE THIS. HER PREVIOUS FILM EARTH HAD EVERYTHING FROM GREAT ACTING ESPECIALLY FROM THE HANDSOME BOLLYWOOD MEGASTAR ACTOR/PRODUCER AAMIR KHAN TO A VERY GOOD SCRIPT AND STRUCTURE THE FILM MANAGED TO STAY IN YOUR MIND FOR A LONG TIME TO COME DUE TO ITS IMPRESSIVE POWERFUL SCENES WHEREAS BOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD DOESNT BOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD LACKED GOOD ACTING AND MOST OF THE ACTORS WOULD BE BETTER IN SOAPS AS THEIR ACTING NEVER REALLY GOES ABOVE THE SOAP TYPE ACTING LISA RAY AND RAHUL KHANNA PROVIDE ABOVE AVERAGE PERFORMANCES BUT COMPARED TO RAHUL KHANNAS GOOD PERFORMANCE IN EARTH HIS IS A LET DOWN AND I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED MORE FROM HIM. LISA RAY IS BETTER THAN SHE WAS IN THE HINDI FILM KASOOR WHICH WAS ONLY SAVED BY THE GOOD ACTING OF THE INDIAN ACTOR AFTAB BUT HERE THERE ARE NO AFTABS HERE TO SAVE THE DAY. BOTH EARTH AND FIRE CAME TOP IN SEVERAL PRESIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS AND WON SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL ADWARDS ASWELL AS BEING A BOX OFFICE HIT IN UPTEEN AMOUNT OF COUNTRIES . ONE WONDERS WHERE A FILM AS AVERAGE AS THIS COULD COME FROM THE SAME TEAM. THE JOKES WERE TERRIABLE AND THE FILM CONTAINED TO MANY OUT OF DATE STEREOTYPES OF BOTH BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD.AND ONE WONDERS WHY IS IT THAT IN BIRTISH/AMERICAN/CANADIAN ASIAN FILMS THERE HAS TO BE THE INDIAN FAMILY THAT CANT STAND THERE CHILDREN DOING THIS AND THAT. THESE STEREOTYPES GET SO BORING AND ONLY CONTRIBUTE TO ADDING MISCONCEPTIONS OF CULTURES ON THE PLUS SIDE THE MUSIC WAS GOOD AND THE SINGING BY TALENTED HINDI/WORLD SINGERS SONU NIGAM SOWMYA ALISHA CHINNOY AMONST OTHERS WAS MUCH APPRECIATED BUT THE GOOD MUSIC AND IMPRESSIVE LAVISH DANCE ROUTINES ONLY SAVED THE FILM FOR HOW LONG THEY LASTED. OTHER PLUS SIDE WAS THE SPECIAL APPERANCE BY BOLLYWOOD STAR AKSHAY KHANNA BROTHER OF RAHUL KHANNA. WHO ADDED GENUINTY TO THE FILM AND CHARISMA. AS WELL AS PERFORMING GOOD IN THE SONG SONA SONA ROOP HOWEVER IT DIDNT LAST LONG ENOUGH, HOW ONE WISHED INSTEAD OF A SPECIAL APPERANCE HE WAS STARRING IN THE FILM.THE BREATH OF FRESH AIR HE PROVIDED WAS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.TO BE FAIR DUE TO DEEPA MEHTAS PREVIOUS FILMS BEING SO INTERNATIONALY APPRECIATED AND RESPECTED DUE THE FIRST CLASS TREATMENT THEY WERE GIVEN IN TERMS OF THE WHOLE PACKAGE EG ,ACTING,SCRIPT,STRUCTURE,MEMORABLENESS PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS EXPECT THE SAME FROM HER OTHER FILMS AND THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD WHO RESPECTED HER FOR EARTH AND FIRE WILL NOT ACCEPT THIS COMMERICAL BANTER.FINALLY FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO SATISFY I RECOMMEND YOU CHECK OUT THE AMAZING HINDI FILM KAL HO NA HO WITH DROP DEAD GORGEOUS CINEMATOGRAPHY AND BEAUTIFULLY RENDERED ACTING AS WELL AS A STRONG HEARTWARMING SCRIPT . OR LINE OF CONTROL A FILM ON THE KARGIL WAR OF 1999 WHICH WILL MAKE EVEN THE MOST HEARTHEARTED PEOPLE CRY WITH ITS POWERFUL PERFORMANCES AND HARDHITTING SCENES ACCOMPANIED BY AMAZING MUSIC PENNED BY DIVINE MEANINGFUL POETRY OR THE HOLLYWOOD FILM COLD MOUNTAIN WHICH IS ALSO GOOD. JUST GIVE THE FILM BOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD A MISS.
Description of Bollywood/Hollywood
When people from a culture largely defined by bollywood find themselves in an environment that is saturated with hollywood the result is a state of mind that celebrates these two seemingly disparate worlds. Directed by Deepa Mehta (Earth), Bollywood Hollywood concerns the desperate effort of wealthy businessman Rahul (Rahul Khanna) to get his mother and grandmother off his back when it comes to his romantic life. In love with a white pop-star girlfriend (Jessica Paré), Rahul's fortunes change when she dies. Still grieving, he is told by his mother that Rahul's only sister won't be allowed to marry until he finds a nice Indian girl to wed. The solution: hire a beautiful, dark-skinned, allegedly Spanish escort named Sue (Lisa Ray) to pose as his Indian fiancée. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, Mehta pokes fun at a number of Bollywood cinema clichés, especially that familiar mix of modern luxury and old world traditions, melodramas involving the saddest of character backstories, and spontaneous musical numbers that remind one as much of Hollywood's Golden Age as Bollywood's current one. --Tom Keogh
