DVD Reviews of Bloodsport : ECW's Most Violent Matches

DVD Review: Great Collection Of Matches
Summary: 4 Stars

This is great for those who have been unable to get their hands on the out of print ECW DVD's from Pioneer Home Entertainment (or don't want to pay over $50 for one on e-bay.) However, if you have alot of those ECW DVD's, there's really nothing new on here besides maybe a couple of matches & Tommy's commentary.

Cactus Jack and Mikey Whipwreck vs. The Public Enemy - This was when ECW was still "Eastern". Honestly, this match doesn't stand the test of time for me & it's really nothing special past the whole "Mickey Whipwreck wins the belt!?!" shocker at the end.
August 27, 1994, ECW Arena
(Clips of this on the Cactus Jack DVD)

The Sandman and Terry Funk vs. Cactus Jack and Shane Douglas - This was one of the wild brawls that ECW was remembered for as they had sinapore canes, guardrails in the ring, a toolbox complete with tools, and even a flaming branding iron.
March 17, 1995, ECW Arena
(Clips on the Cactus Jack DVD & in full on Deep Impact)

Axl Rotten vs. Ian Rotten - This is the famous match that put ECW on the map for violence. Broken glass attached to their taped up hands held on by glue (ala the movie "Kickboxer"). This match is just for those who love to see just two guys beat the hell out of each other.
Taipei Death Match
Hardcore Heaven July 7, 1995
(Path Of Destruction)

Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Psicosis - Just like a "Last Man Standing" match, you gotta beat your opponett down to the point to where they can't answer a 10 count...but you have to score a pinfall before the count begins. Great lucha libre action with a twist of the hardcore style.
Mexican Death Match
November 2 Remember, November 18, 1995

Chris Jericho vs. Shane Douglas vs. 2 Cold Scorpio vs. Pitbull #2 - This match itself is full of historical highlights. It was the only four way match in ECW history along with one of the rare appearences of Chris Jericho in ECW (before going to WCW). This was also the match that saw Francince turn on the Pitbulls to start her long association with Shane Douglas and were Shane DDT's Pitbull #1 on the TV title belt breaking his neck (and that's no storyline, he really did it.) The match itself was a wrestling clinic as they went over 20 minutes without an elimination and unlike most elimination matches...it wasn't pinfall after pinfall after pinfall in just a matter of seconds. One of the greatest "wrestling" matches in ECW.
ECW Heatwave 1996
(Path Of Destruction)

Tommy Dreamer vs. Brian Lee - Well the title says it all, they were just beating the hell out of each other with everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink. The big highlight here was Chainz...oops, I mean fake "Undertaker"...sorry, I really mean Brian Lee chokeslamming Tommy Dreamer off the balcony through 3-4 tables. This was a personal favorite as this was the first image I ever saw of ECW when I caught their TV show late at night one night.
Weapons Match
ECW Hardcore Heaven 1996

Sabu vs. Rob Van Dam - These two were trained together & learned off each other's styles while growing up so you can see that this is going to be a great match (and they never had a bad one). Very physical match.
Stretcher Match
The Doctor is In, August 3, 1996
(Hardcore History)

Terry Funk vs. The Sandman vs. Stevie Richards - The main event of ECW's first PPV and the best match Stevie Richards has had in his career. This involved barbed wire, ladders, and trash cans. Great three way dance.
ECW Barely Legal
(Barely Legal)

Bonus Match: ECW Champion Raven vs. Terry Funk - This is one right after the other match as a bonus. This was more about the emotional story of Terry Funk getting his "one last run" than a match itself. Tons of cameos by Tommy Dreamer & Raven's flock. Just a very emotional match.
ECW Barely Legal
(Barely Legal)

DISC TWO:
Terry Funk vs. Sabu - This was the most brutial match in ECW history as they just got so entangled in the barbed wire that they had to be cut apart for minutes after the match. Even manager Bill Alfonzo was bleeding during this match. It's so violent that you'll hear Paul Heyman say afterwards "I never did another one because nobody could top that one...I didn't want them to."
No Ropes Barbed Wire Match
Born to Be Wired
(Deep Impact Uncensored)

Beulah McGillicutty vs. Bill Alfonso - Alfonso bleeds buckets here as him & Beulah have a match that it will go down as one of the most intense in ECW.
As Good as It Gets, September 1997, ECW Arena
(Deep Impact Uncensored in the Extreme Moments section)

Taz vs. Bam Bam Bigelow - The rematch from Living Dangerously (seen on the Rise & Fall Of ECW) that tops this one as it's Tazz & Bigelow just beat each other down even more than they did the last time. The spot though the ramp at the end was really something. Shane Douglas' commentary is really amusing as well (since he was fueding with Taz at the time)
ECW Death Match
ECW Heatwave 1998
(Heatwave 98)

Shane Douglas vs. Taz - First of all, their Guilty As Charged match was the Hogan vs. Sting of ECW to where it was perfectly built up for a year but when the match finally happened, it was overbooked with tons of outside interfearence and the match itself was lackluster to the point to where the crowd started to chant "boring" after a few minutes. NOW THIS REMATCH HEAVILY MAKES UP FOR IT and was the match their GAC match should have been. Taz & Shane both wrestled & brawled out to the point to where Shane was a heavy heel but the crowd got behind him as well. Again, this was the best showing from the Shane/Taz fued that was big in ECW back in '98/early '99.
Hardcore TV, 1999

The Dudley Boyz vs. Spike Dudley and Balls Mahoney - In '99, these four guys gave the best brawls thoughout the ECW and this was no exception. Just a fight all over the building and the ending with the flaming table was something to see at that time.
Chicago Street Fight
Hardcore TV, 1999

Mike Awesome vs. Spike Dudley - Mike Awesome completely DESTROYS Spike Dudley in this match as he puts Spike through so many tables & high impact power moves. However the in ring story of Spike never giving up & actually giving Awesome a few hits of his own makes this another match as something to watch.
Guilty as Charged 2000

Rhino vs. The Sandman - This was one of the duds of the DVD...not because it's a bad match but because it's the worst one of out their series of matches. The match itself is only around 8 minutes and just consist of brawling non-stop until the eventual outside interference happens. It would have been better to put one of their matches from Hardcore Heaven or Heatwave 2000 on here.
ECW on TNN, February 2000

Super Crazy vs. Little Guido vs. Yoshihiro Tajiri - If you saw their match at One Night Stand then you know what to expect here as these two put on another great mixed wrestling showcase. Guido's shoot styles, Crazy's' lucha libre, and Tajiri's japanese style made this a great match. It wasn't the best match between these two (my favorite is the one from Anarchy Rulz '99) but that doesn't mean it's not worth watching.
ECW on TNN, March 2000

Tommy Dreamer vs. CW Anderson - This was at the last ECW PPV (before WWE took over) and was really a highlight. These two just went back & forth & it really gave C.W. Anderson credibility as a big player in ECW. The alternate commentary with Tommy Dreamer and The Coach talks about how Tommy got ready for this match by watching the old Magnum T.A. vs. Tully Blanchard cage match and also how it was his job in ECW to put over & establish new top main event talents for the company. A funny story of how they ended up getting the razor wire used during the match...and how anybody, INCLUDING THE TOWEL BOY OF ALL PEOPLE, could get over in ECW.
I Quit Match
ECW Guilty as Charged 2001
(Guilty As Charged 01)

Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka - I read how alot of people say this match shouldn't have been on here since it was on the One Night Stand DVD but if you hear Paul Heyman before the match, I would agree that this is on here because at One Night Stand...this was the match that best represented ECW. I mean, these two didn't hold back & just balls out that this was the match of the night. Awesome & Tatanka used tables, chairs and high impact moves non-stop.
ECW One Night Stand, June 12th, 2005
(One Night Stand)

Extras Section: Public Enemy vs. Gangstas - Just another wild brawl (as most of these two tag team matches were) but this was more historical as it was the "farewell" match for Public Enemy, ECW's first homegrown act, before they left for WCW.
House Party '96

Extras include interview with various ECW stars on matches on this disc: Axl Rotten on the Taipei Death Match; Dudleys & Balls on the flaming tables; C.W. Anderson on his "I Quit" Match and a "history" video on the Cactus/Whipwreck vs. P.E. match. Also Joey Styles talks about what he conciders "hardcore", Doring & Roadkill talk breaking into the business, Justin Credible on being ECW Champion, and a hidden extra from Balls Mahoney telling the story of being put through the flaming table.

They did a great job with this one & really expanded ECW's video library and didn't just pick matches with the same guys so the wrestling or spots become repetative & lose it's shock value. Plus unlike Rise & Fall, they did more repect to Public Enemy. The only critism I could have besides the Rhino/Raven match was that they could have included a match from the Raven/Sandman fued (they had Raven/Dreamer on Rise & Fall) since it was one of the biggest fueds in ECW history. This is real ECW...not the crap you see on the Sci-Fi channel.
