Movie - 4.0

Contrary to some people who don't have the grammatical or critical thinking skills to even give a well thought out/explanatory review, I happen to have enjoyed this movie, having already seen it 3 times upon the time of typing this and losing no interest whatsoever after repeated viewings. Let's get two things straight: 1) This is a Will Ferrell movie, of course it's gonna' be immature and juvenile. That's his style of comedy and always has been since his SNL days. If you never liked his quirks to begin with and was expecting a surprise performance like Stranger than Fiction, then you're either very high maintenance in your taste for movies, and thus should not have watched this (or most of his movies) in the first place. Or, you admittedly hate him anyway and just watched this movie to bash him mindlessly and gratify your own self-justifications. 2) This was produced by BEN STILLER. I don't care if you dropped out of elementary, even 6 year-old kids could tell you that this wasn't going to be as clever as a Coen Brothers or Larry David project. My rant on the uneducated haters aside, I liked this movie because of the quirkiness that Ferrell (and now Heder, if he retains even the slightest hint of Napoleon in any of his future characters) bring to the table. Of all things to parody, they had to pick Male Pairs ice-skating. In particular, I liked the simplistic approach of opposites in each of their characters: the rough, outspoken, sexaholic fire in Chazz Michael Michaels versus the soft, reformed, eloquent metrosexual ice in Jimmy MacElroy. It could be argued that maybe the two of them were too extreme in their personalities. And pairing them together not only made them friends in the end, but also made them more balanced. Throw on top of that the slapstick antics of having to work together and overcoming a creepy sibling couple and their cute sister, and you've got many a hijinks abound.

Video - 4.0

Being one of the few comedy titles I initially picked up at the beginning of my Blu-ray collection, I wasn't expecting that great a transfer, especially for a Will Ferrell movie. But I was surprised to see to a pretty good amount of clarity throughout most of the film. Colors were vibrant and easily discernible in the various backgrounds and costume designs, sharpness was good, though not great, resulting in a few blurry shots on the ice, and there were a few inconsistencies in grain where one scene might have it, then be absent the next. Contrast felt a little overblown in the beginning of the film, but you get used to it as the "plot" progresses.

Audio - 4.0

Dialogue is very clear with zero dropout or volume discrepancies. And while mostly dialogue-based, the PCM 5.1 does become better utilized during skate scenes in the arenas. Everything from crowd noise to music to the blades sliding across the ice are well-represented. Directionality spreads itself out to the rear speaker and, though not as impressive as any good action movie, does the job it's supposed to.

Extras - 4.0

Only one or two of the segments actually felt like production exposures. The rest feels more like improv and bloopers that, quite honestly, are pretty entertaining. Various members of the cast are asked questions, but give silly, almost nonsensical replies. Then there's the interview with Hector.. good laughs.

Overall - 4.0

Again, this is Will Ferrell we're talking about. Keep your expectations low, and there shouldn't be a problem. I, personally, can stand just about any brand of comedy that's out there (except for those spoof Movies, the first Scary Movie was good, but everything else those people did is garbage). Good performances by all the actors, a simple story, and lots of slapstick on a very presentable BD make this a recommendation.

DVD Review: typically will ferell comedy
Summary: 4 Stars

it was funny. you'll enjoy it if you like hot will ferell's other movies.

also, jenna fischer is awesome. wish she was in more movies.

you'll also probably enjoy this movie if you like figure skating, but don't take it or yourself too seriously.

DVD Review: Pretty Boring
Summary: 2 Stars

With a Will Ferrell movie you pretty much know what to expect. And with John Heder you get basically the same guy in every movie. This, however, was so far below part that it was painful to watch. I didn't want to finish it but I did in the hopes that it would somehow, somewhere along the way get better. If you compare it to Anchorman or Napoleon Dynamite you are sure to be sorely disappointed. This just wasn't a funny movie.

Description of Blades of Glory (Widescreen Edition)

When rival figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) go ballistic in an embarrassing, no-holds-barred fight at the World Championships, they are stripped of their gold medals and banned from the sport for life. Now, three-and-a-half years on, they've found a loophole that will allow them to compete: if they can put aside their differences, they can skate together - in pairs' figure skating
Take two male figure skaters, throw in a preposterous storyline, and you've got Blades of Glory, a surprisingly funny film that almost makes you forgive Will Ferrell for his back-to-back 2005 clunkers Kicking & Screaming and Bewitched. This time around, Ferrell eats the scenery in his role as a sex-addicted, cocky skating champ named Chazz Michael Michaels. When he gets into an on-podium fight with his nemesis and co-gold medallist Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite), both skaters are banned from competing in men's figure-skating events. Forever. Their fall from grace is brutal. Chazz is forced to work for a D-list skating show, while pampered Jimmy is disowned by his wealthy and cold-hearted adoptive father (excellently played by William Fichtner), who only wants to be around winners. When Jimmy points out that he tied for gold, his dad cruelly says, "If I wanted to share, I would've bought you a brother." Flash forward 3-1/2 years and Jimmy's No. 1 stalker Hector (Nick Swardson) says he's found a loophole. Jimmy's been banned from men's singles events, but there's nothing that says he can't compete in pairs skating. After a chance meeting with Chazz, mayhem ensues as the two rivals team up to go against the brother-and-sister team of Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg (played by Will Arnett and his real-life wife, Amy Poehler of Saturday Night Live and Mean Girls fame). The Van Waldenbergs will stop at nothing to beat the competition, even if that means literally beating up the competition. They have no qualms manipulating their sweet little sister (Jenna Fischer, The Office) to seduce both men to try to break up the team.

The finale will be no surprise to moviegoers who know that comedies like this aren't set up to make its leading men losers. But there is one brief skating sequence set in North Korea that will surprise (and shock) many viewers because of its brutality. Ferrell and Heder make a great comedy team. Though he has been accused of playing the same role since his breakthrough performance in Napoleon Dynamite and, to a certain extent, plays a similar type of role here, Heder is spot-on as Jimmy. He manages to convey innocence, bitterness, and longing--all within the span of a few seconds and while wearing a peacock unitard (You can understand why Hector is so enthralled with him). Look for guest appearances by real-life skating champs Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Nancy Kerrigan, and Sasha Cohen, who gets to sniff Chazz's jockstrap. --Jae-Ha Kim
