Blu-ray Review: Blade 2 Blu-ray Quality Review

After reading many of the reviews and especially those made for the Blu-ray release, I felt I needed to comment as I found a lot of opinions, but few that summarized what I wanted to know. That said, I am not rating the movie itself; you're big boys and girls and can make those decisions yourself. I am rating the quality of the product.

Is it better video quality than the DVD version? Yes. A DVD is lower resolution and has been compressed (i.e. data discarded causing loss of picture quality) to fit on a DVD disc. It can potentially be compressed even more to allow for extras. The Blu-ray was taken from the same master copy as the DVD and was upconverted. This means the Blu-ray version is of better quality than the upconverted DVD. Since I own both DVD and Blu-ray editions, I can confirm the quality is better, looking at items such as faint wisps of smoke, sparks shooting from dying vamps, sharpness between light and dark colors, reflected images, etc.

If you are someone who buys movies more for the other stuff on the disc, you will be disappointed as there is no menu or extras. It shows a screen where the menu would be stating the move will begin in moments. Once it starts, you only have the basic control menu (up arrow menu). Also, this is just an upconverted version with no new remastering so some items will still be a little blurry on the edges (like some of the closer sparks when a vamp dies).

All in all, I had to give this product 4 stars. I subtracted 2 stars from 5 because it was not remastered nor had extras, but added 1 star because they gambled and released it on Blu-ray in this economy and after Wesley's incarceration.

Description of Blade 2 [Blu-ray]

Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as "a vomitorium of viscera," Blade II takes the express route to sequel success. So if you enjoyed Blade, you'll probably drool over this monster mash, which is anything but boring. Set (and filmed) in Prague, the plot finds a new crop of "Reaper" vampires threatening to implement a viral breeding program, and they're nearly impervious to attacks by Blade (Wesley Snipes), his now-revived mentor Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), and a small army of "normal" vampires who routinely combust in a constant conflagration of spectacular special effects. It's up to Blade to conquer the über-vamps, and both Snipes and director Guillermo del Toro (Mimic) serve up a nonstop smorgasbord of intensely choreographed action, creepy makeup, and graphic ultraviolence. It's sadistic, juvenile, numbing, and--for those who dig this kind of thing--undeniably impressive. With the ever-imposing Ron Perlman as a vampire villain. --Jeff Shannon
