DVD Reviews of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern: Collection 1

DVD Review: I am hopelessly addicted to this show!
Summary: 5 Stars

Andrew Zimmern is a great guy and perfect for hosting "Bizarre Foods" - he is laidback, courteous to everyone, respectful of all cultures, and has guts of steel! OMG - the food he consumes in this show just defy credibility, but consume them he does, and he seems to genuinely enjoy most of them, lol. In this collection, Andrew visits Morocco, Spain, the Philippines, Ecuador, New York City, the UK, and America's Gulf Coast. Having always had the dream of visiting Morocco someday, I have to say that was my favorite episode, but um, I think I'll refrain from trying out some of the more exotic dishes on the menu:) Great show, I love "Bizarre Foods" [and my other favorite is "No Reservations" with Anthony Bourdain].

DVD Review: You are what you eat
Summary: 4 Stars

Andrew Zimmern is such a...NUT... for "bizarre foods". He LOVES him some "nuts". "Bizarre" food they call it for the show and it IS, from our American-living-in-the-21st-Century perspective. But basically the food Zimmern consumes is traditional food from places all over the world the preparation and consumption of which dates back to before the time of freezers and refrigerators and when people couldn't afford to waste one bit of precious edible animal or plant. Not one bit. And being that food could not usually be preserved by freezing it, often it would rot and be eaten latter. This is a fun show and a good edition to the Travel Channel lineup. Zimmern will probably not convince you to broaden your pallet to the level of his or make your appetite so voracious that you'll be traveling the globe gobbling down all the nuts you can get your hands on. But it is entertaining watching him gobble down *anything* put before him and you'll have a greater awareness of almost limitless culinary possibilities. How narrow and lacking in imagination we have been! McDonald's?! Now THAT is truly bizarre food! This is surely Zimmern's mission you see. In one episode he actually meets his match. You know what it was? Well, I'm not sure myself, but it's called "stinky tofu". This little old Asian lady prepares her tofu squares by letting them soak for days in some sort of rotten juice made from vegetables. Or something. Point is it is rotten and reminds me of muddy swamp water and it's absolutely revolting. It induced Zimmern's gag reflex.

DVD Review: Foods!
Summary: 5 Stars

Andrew Zimmern is GREAT!
His show is educational and entertaining!
I am hooked! Can't wait to get the get season!

DVD Review: Fun Filled Indigenous Foods
Summary: 5 Stars

If the network had called this indigenous foods they might not have been picked up for another season. But call it bizarre - that works! Andrew Zimmern takes us around the planet in search of what we have deemed as bizarre foods but mostly. the foods he seeks are those that have been local staples sometimes for thousands of years. It isn't just the foods and places that makes this show so fascinating - but Andrew Zimmern is just completely delightful. He is fun, honorable and just plain sweet! I have to confess that one of the things on my list of things I would like to do before i kick the bucket - is dine with Andrew Zimmern. Two of my favorite episodes are in this collection - NY and the UK. Truly delightful, educational and fun! 10 stars!
