Great Transition Between TaeBo Basic & Advanced
Workout Description: 27 minutes of cardio with 7 minutes of warm-up and 8 minutes of stretch for a total of 42 minutes
Workout Level: low to mid-intermediate; mid-level impact; basic level of choreography
Instructor: Billy Blanks (Creator of TaeBo; 5-time Karate Champion and captain of the 1980 US Olympic Karate team; has a 7th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.). Billy is very enthusiastic and encouraging, although he's a bit much for me. His cueing is improved in this video over previous ones, but he still does not work each side equally or give you enough warning of his intention to change moves. (I know this just isn't me because his assistant stops a couple of times to see exactly what Billy is doing.)
Class: women and 2 men of various ages and sizes. Shelli counts out by 8 and serves as Billy's model for several moves.
Music / Set: The music is rather non-descript; it consists mainly of a repetitive beat and does not have vocals. The interior set is carpeted and painted with bright colors.
Equipment needed: sneakers
Caveats: Pay attention to your form. Prior experience with TaeBo, kickboxing, or martial arts is necessary as there is little explanation of technique beyond a few form pointers. Be careful with your foot placement if you're on carpet. I find that I need to do a little bit more of a warm-up than Billy provides. His Tai Chi-based cool down has never done much for me, so I cool down on my own and then do my own stretch.
Additional Comments: You will need a bit of space for this workout. You should be able to take a small step and kick to each side and to the front plus take a step or two to the back.
This workout is a good bridge between the TaeBo Basic series (which are often 20-30 minutes long and don't have much in the way of combinations) and the Advanced (which are often 50+ minutes). The routine is a little better put together and produced than other TaeBo, but don't expect it to be as intense as any of the Advanced series or even the Ultimates.
The DVD has no chapters or extras.
