DVD Reviews of Best of the Best

DVD Review: Quickie reviews for all 4 "Best of the Best" movies. (some minor spoilers)
Summary: 5 Stars

"Best of the Best" (1989)- Eric Roberts, Phillip Rhee, Chris Penn, and a slew of other character actors come together under the rough training of James Earl Jones to defeat the vicious Team Korea in an international karate championship (though to be a nitpicky, most of what we see onscreen is taekwondo). I loved this movie. I honestly didn't expect much from a little heard of, PG-13 martial arts flick that no one seems to talk about, but man what a suprise! We get fun training scenes, memorable, likable characters thanks to a who's-who cast of character actors, all leading up to an unexpected, genuinley tear-jerking finale. Seriously, it takes a lot to make me cry during a movie, but the ending of this sucker made mini-waterfalls fall from my face. The makings of a good, good movie. Very underrated, highly reccomended.

"Best of the Best 2" (1993)- Phillip Rhee and Eric Roberts return when their buddy from the first film, played by Chris Penn, gets killed off in The Coliseum, an underground (literally) gladiator-style fight arena. After injuring the hulking owner of The Coliseum, played by Ralph Moeller in his film debut, a cross-state chase ensues that sees Moeller's goons attempting to chase down Rhee and Roberts with hopes of bringing Rhee back to The Coliseum for a fight. Though it misses out on the feel-good atmosphere of the first, "Best of the Best 2" is still solid, good fun, if you like early 90's action flicks. The protagonists are still likable, and the new villains, though a bit corny, are decent anyway. The moderate PG-13 of the first movie is amped up to a solid R, with a number of larger-scale action and fight scenes including bloody shootings and a few pretty graphic head-to-head fights. Inferior to the first, but only slightly so. Entertaining if you enjoy classic early 90's action mixed with arena movies like "Bloodsport" or "American Samurai".

"Best of the Best 3: No Turning Back" (1995)- In this thriller, Phillip Rhee returns as Tommy Lee, who heads to a small town in Nevada to meet up with his sister and her family. Unfortunatley, the town is terorized by a large, well-armed clan of white supremecists. When his sister's kids are taken, it's up to Lee to take them back. As many have noted, this is when the series began to take a downfall. Gone is the feel-good nature and elements of true courage and comradery of the first two, now replaced with mindless action. This reason, however, is why I like "Best of the Best 3". Sure it's a major downgrade character and story-wise, but hey, I like fighting and action and that's what I got. The viewer is treated to fights here and there, but it all pays off when we get a high-end finale filled with gratuitous explosions and mindless shoot'em ups. There's also an attempt to make a statement against bigotry and the like, but it all just becomes sort of overblown and un-subtle, noted by a really cheesy sort of "can't we all just get along?"-type montage around the 40-minute point. Point go to this one for action, an attempt at subtext and for having the eternally-sexy Gina Gershon in the cast, but it is still admittedly weak compared to the first two.

"Best of the Best 4: Without Warning" (1998)- Phillip Rhee is back again, and this time he goes head to head with a team of rich, oddball Russian criminals searching for a disc that was planted on him by a double agent. You think that a movie with Phillip Rhee, Tobin Bell of the "Saw" series, Art LaFluer, "Ghostbusters" alluminite Ernie Hudson, the late, great Paul Gleason, and the always badass Sven Ole Thorsen couldn't be bad. Well, you'd be quite wrong. This, as many have already said before, is easily the worst in the series. Though far from unwatchable, it's still a far, lifeless cry from the first two movies and even the decent 3rd one. The plot is cliched and overblown, the acting ranges from hammy to wooden to unwatchable, and the special effects are atrocious; we are exposed to dodgy CGI explosions, jaw-dropping mattes, and hard-to-watch techniques like speeding up the film, which just looks stupid. Worst of all, most of our actors are wasted. LaFluer shows up just to be killed, Gleason is totally wasted as a generic church priest, Hudson's jerk character is totally wrong for him, and Rhee's nice guy routine is starting to get old. Sure some of the fight and action scenes aren't too terrible (notable moments include a swordfight at Tobin Bell's mansion and a badass shootout where Ernie Hudson takes out 4 or 5 bad guys), but these aren't near enough to save this entry's overbearing lameness.
