DVD Review: good movie bad tellin of epic

this is a good movie dont get me wrong there but considering the historical treasure that is the epic of beaowulf this film came no where near honoring the story that has been dated back b4 written lanuage!! one of the oldest stories and they just killed it..... if u watch the movie please read the poem by reading it youll get a more indepth vision of this great story.but as i said its a good movie but a badd version of beaowulf..left me in a state of limbo..

This movie has great graphics, great actors/actresses (Hopkins, Jolie, etc), great writers (Writer of the comic, Sandman).... but it doesn't work. It is like mixing pizza and ice cream together because they are your favorite foods. Unfortunately.... Beowulf is a dog. Avoid this movie unless you are renting.

This re-telling of the great tale of Beowulf is an utter failure in every way. The animation is dank, dark, dull. The characters look more like uncomfortable robots than imitations of living creatures. The basic story is trashed and Grendel's mother (the animated Jolie) is ridiculous. Read the epic (or see even Beowulf and Grendel), but forget this piece of trash.

Beowulf is a great movie, I think it's the future of animation, when I saw this on the big screen I was blown away with this movie, great scenes and from time to time you forgot you were watching an animated movie.

Using the same technique as in "The Polar Express" but better, director Robert Zemeckis capture the live performance of actors like Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright Penn and Angelina Jolie among others. On the movie "Polar Express" it was a bummer seeing Tom Hanks on almost every scene, here we enjoy a really good movie done in a proper way.

The script is good, but the visuals is what captures you from the start.

However my complain is on the extras, there are a lot of featurettes, some are very interesting, even if they are really short. The problem is a movie like this deserves commentary from the director which is nowhere to be found. Also there is little input on how Angelina Jolie delivered such a powerful character as Grendel's mother.

There are deleted scenes, but they are more like incomplete scenes with no texture. I think it was kinda rip off.

This DVD claims it has more intense scenes not seen in theaters, but the scenes are inserted on the full movie, there is no option to see the theatrical release and the director's cut, you only guess there are more scenes on there but you aren't really not sure because there are no commentaries.

Buy it for the movie itself, still delivers !

DVD Review: blood and butts, pass...

I guess I never really understood what they were trying to do with this movie. It was like watching "Shrek" with alot of violence and nudity. (blood and butts, if you will) By the time I got over the visuals of the movie (the "real" animation was pretty disconcerting at first), I was stuck in the middle of a very boring plot. I'm not sure, but I don't think it followed the real storyline of Beowulf. I was very disappointed in this movie.

Spectacular animated action scenes turn the ancient epic poem Beowulf into a modern fantasy movie, while motion-capture technology transforms plump actor Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) into a burly Nordic warrior. When a Danish kingdom is threatened by the monster Grendel (voiced and physicalized by Crispin Glover, River's Edge), Beowulf--lured by the promise of heroic glory--comes to rescue them. He succeeds, but falls prey to the seductive power of Grendel's mother, played by Angelina Jolie... and as Jolie's pneumatically animated form rises from an underground lagoon with demon-claw high heels, it becomes clear that we're leaving the original epic far, far behind. Regrettably, the motion-capture process has made only modest improvements since The Polar Express; while the characters' eyes no longer look so flat and zombie-like, their faces remain inexpressive and movements are still wooden. As a result, the most effective sequences feature wildly animated battles and the most vivid character is Grendel, whose grotesqueness ends up making him far more sympathetic than any of the mannequin-like human beings. The meant-to-be-titillating images of a naked Jolie resemble an inflatable doll more than a living, breathing woman (or succubus, as the case may be). But the fights--particularly Grendel's initial assault on the celebration hut--pop with lushly animated gore and violence.
