This DVD does give tips on developing proper technique. But for a beginner who is starting out, it may not keep your interest for too long.
There is a lot of material here, but it's not set up in a way that is extremely engaging.
It's more of an encyclopedia of moves, and how to do them. There isn't much repetition or drilling, you have to do it on your own.
If you're more experienced and would like to work more on your basic moves, then perhaps this would be alright for you. But for a beginner starting out, it may prove to be a little boring. There really is no music during the tutorials.
There is a short performance at the end, but its not really something you're building up to.
This video doesn't have much of a "fun" factor to it, its more serious. If you're looking for that, then go for it.

This DVD has helped me understand the basics and come along in my exploration of belly dance very quickly. Jenna's instruction is clear, understandable and fun. Everything is broken down and explained and the pace is just right. I never once felt overwhelmed during this DVD and if you are a beginning belly dancer who wants to progress quickly I cannot recommend this DVD highly enough! Thanks Jenna!!! The information on the disc was excellent, but I couldn't get it to play on all of my DVD players for some reason. I've purchased several beginner belly dance videos and my knees kept hurting. Then I got Belly Dance basics and beyond with Jenna, and this is by far the very best one. I found out I was doing several moves wrong and was hurting my knees and lower back. After she explained the correct way to do it my pain left. She actually breaks the moves down and goes through them step by step like if you where there in her studio. It is more boring than the others at first because your going slower and learning the correct form of each movement. One thing I've learned is that you have to pause the video after each lesson to practice it on your own. But she puts so much more into her video than any of the others all put together, and for what all you get in this video it's well worth it.
This video is for if you really want to learn belly dancing correctly. The others I'd say would be more for just something to do to exercise.
I will buy her intermediate video when I'm done with this one.
You won't believe all the lessons she packs into this one video.
I feel I didn't get my moneys worth on these videos by: Veena & Neena Basic dance, beyond basic, and mystic belly dance. They maybe fun to do after you do Jenna's video and learn how to do everything correctly.
Yes, I would buy Jenna's video again... I don't think I'd buy the videos by Veena and Neena again (not enough instruction)...
Description of Bellydance Basics and Beyond: Technique for a Solid Foundation
Bellydance Basics & Beyond is a 2 hr. 20 min. program designed to teach the fundamental movements of bellydance and encourage their practice in a wide range of dance combinations.Jenna's methodical presentation of bellydance basics begins with POSTURE, the foundation on which dance movement is built. The BASIC ARMS section teaches you how to maintain and enhance a beautiful elongated body line through graceful positioning of the arms and hands.
WARMUP includes select dance moves and dynamic stretches and is designed as a light total-body workout.
The FOOTWORK section lays the foundation for traveling steps, focusing on a number of patterns, such as basic walk, 2-step and triple step traveling and ways to change directions.
ISOLATIONS of shoulders, ribcage and hips are building blocks of bellydance movement. Jenna breaks down slides, lifts, drops, arcs and sharp accents. Some of these elements are dance moves in their own right, and others help to form compound moves.
COMPOUND MOVES are the essential vocabulary of bellydance - circles, undulations and figure 8s. Jenna's technique of building them from the smallest and most basic elements up, ensures that they are performed with effortless grace. Next, Jenna shows how to layer simple and compound moves on top of TRAVELING steps.
PRACTICE COMBINATIONS offer five 5-minute practice sessions made from many exciting bellydance combinations. As you follow Jenna, you can listen to the music together with her verbal cues or you can select the music-only option. This section offers a series of excellent technique drills and can be combined with the WARMUP for a fantastic 30-minute moderate workout. The last session contains stretches and can serve as a cooldown.
