DVD Reviews of Before SunsetDVD Review: A Story So Many of Us Know and Appreciate Summary: 5 StarsThis is an enchanting story of two people separated by time and a continent, who essentially don't give up hope. Upon reintroducion they each talk about the circumstances that have transpired during the absence and slowly the story unfolds to one of promise fulfilled. A must for those enchanted and faithful to a dream.
DVD Review: Better than the original Summary: 5 StarsI was forced to see Before Sunrise on DVD by my best friend who adored the movie. Although it has many fans, there was just something about it that seemed too unrealistic and I just couldn't relate. Years later on a girls night out, my friends voted to see the sequel in the theatre. I was simply amazed at how much I loved this movie! The dialogue between the two was so realistic and interesting. I loved seeing the changes in the two charachters. The still lovely Julie Delply charachter had grown cynical with age. There's a sense of tragedy in Jesse's charachter. You can see how much he still pines for Celine and has always thought of the night they shared in Vienna and the what-if's have plagued him for years. Something tells me Jesse makes his flight at the end, but not of his own choice. I'd love to see another sequel to see what happens next!
DVD Review: 3.5 stars out of 4 Summary: 5 StarsThe Bottom Line:
Before Sunset does what sequels should do but often don't: it stays true to the nature of the original while also taking the story to a new place; sadder and more pessimistic than the original, Sunset skillfully and emotionally continues the story of Jesse and Celine and ends just about perfectly.
DVD Review: Hold's the same magic 10 years later Summary: 4 StarsI was a HUGE "Before Sunrise" fan since the movie came out and so I really didn't want to see this because I was worried that it was going to ruin the ambiance of the 'series', but being a true fan I watched & loved it! It picks up where you would expect they left off. Also I was watching the documentary and Ethan Hawke said that himself, Delpy & Linklater is going to try to make another sequel in another 10 years and I sincerly hope they do!
DVD Review: DAZZLING Summary: 5 StarsThe chemistry between Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy is magical, and the screenplay by director Richard Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke is superb. BEFORE SUNSET is every bit as romantic as BEFORE SUNRISE, and just as funny, with dialogue so real you can taste it. It is also enormously romantic, without gimmicks, and cliche-free. As glorious as BEFORE SUNSET is by itself, it is even better if seen after BEFORE SUNRISE.
Description of Before SunsetNine years ago two strangers met by chance spent a night together in vienna & parted before sunrise. Now they cross paths again - in paris - where they will get the chance we all wish we had. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 02/08/2005 Starring: Ethan Hawke Julie Delpy Run time: 80 minutes Rating: R In 1994, director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Waking Life) made Before Sunrise, a gorgeous poem of a movie about two strangers (played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) wandering around Vienna, talking, and falling in love. Ten years later, Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy have returned with Before Sunset, which reunites the same characters after Hawke has written a book about that night. Delpy appears at the final book reading of his European tour; they have less than two hours before Hawke has to catch a flight to New York...and in that time, they walk around Paris, talk, and fall in love all over again. It sounds simple, perhaps dull, but it's written with such skill and care and acted with such richness that it's a miracle of filmmaking. On its own, Before Sunset is moving and wonderful; seen right after Before Sunrise, it will break your heart. --Bret Fetzer
