DVD Reviews of Beerfest (Unrated Widescreen Edition)

DVD Review: Problem with DVD
Summary: 1 Stars

I got this DVD because I liked the movie, it was cheap and so on. The problem I have with it is that it will not play in my DVD player....won't even recognize it. The movie is 5 stars. But I got a lousy dvd. Now because I got it on the cheap it is not even worth sending it back for a refund. Thought you may want to know. Let the Buyer beware!

DVD Review: How much beer can you drink?
Summary: 2 Stars

This unrated version runs 1:56.
This DVD begins with a preview of The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning (2007), followed by the option menu for Beerfest (2006) which is a 2 min. 36 sec. of a Beerfest Press Conference not included in the movie. This will repeat.
After 9 min. 20 sec. the movie will automatically begin if you have not made a choice in the menu.
Johann Von Wolfhaus (Donald Sutherland) has given his grandchildren Jan (Paul Soter) and Todd (Erik Stolhanske) the family restaurant upon his death. He has one request. They must take his ashes to Munich, Germany during the festival of Oktoberfest. They are to meet a Mr. Schniedelwichsen (Bjorn Johnson) who will show them where to place the urn.
Not everything goes so smoothly with all the beer and food to be had. That is until Mr. Schniedelwichsen takes them to an underground Beerfest where they meet their cousins.
The competitive cousins do not welcome their American relatives and throw grandpa's ashes on them.
So Jan and Todd decide to train for next year's Beerfest competition with the help of their friends Barry (Jay Chandrasekhar), Fink (Steve Lemme) and Landfill (Kevin Heffernan).

This unrated version is quite overlong, but you will find Cloris Leachman and Jay Chandrasekhar to be scene stealers.

All five of the main stars (Jay Chandrasekhar, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, Kevin Hefferman) were also writers for this film.
Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar. Erik Stolhanske and Steve Lemme served as Producers.

Special Features: 2 audio commentaries, features. There is a keg full of long deleted scenes that last 27 minutes.

Option of subtitles in English, French, Spanish.

Cast also includes: Will Forte, Eric, Christian Olsen,Cameron Scher, Pab Schwendimann, Philippe Brenninkmeyer, Nat Faxon, Willie Nelson.

Their was no "Potfest" movie. That was just a joke.

DVD Review: Beer & Fun go together!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this movie! I watched it twice before I asked my wife to see it. She laughed her ass off! I was laughing with her. I really did not know if she would like it, but she really did! The movie comes in from all different angles & funny on every angle. I highly recommend!

DVD Review: Great For Watching With Friends
Summary: 5 Stars

Beerfest the movie from the guys who made Super Troopers. The setting and plot are the makings of an underdog story. USA vs the Germans one more time. The Germans, best drinkers in the world, against the rag tag team from the USA. This isn't what I would call Academy Award acting, but each character has a stereotypical uniqueness and charm put into them.

When sitting around watching this with all your buddies drinking, or you just need a pick me up, there aren't that many movies that can beat out Beerfest. I recommend.

DVD Review: BEEEEEEER!! OM NOM NOM!
Summary: 4 Stars

Jan and Todd Wolfhouse grandpa has recently passed away by pulling his own plug. His dying wishes were that his ashes be spread at Oktoberfest. Instead of sadness, they encounter awesomeness. Everywhere around them is beer and hot chicks. What a great way to send their grandfather off. Until they almost kill everyone around them by accident. They are kicked out from the fest and then, with the help of someone who once knew their grandfather, they come upon a secret sort of Olympic type games... one that involves beer. Beerfest! Within these games are teams from all types of countries, except for America. The Germans, who happen to be cousins of Jan and Todd, despise the two and destroy them at a mere chugging game. Humiliated, the two return home and decide to create a team to rival the Germans next year at Beerfest. After collecting three more, the team begins their beer drinking training, ranging from shooting quarters, chugging, high pouring, upside down chugging, and even trying to unlock the mystery of Das Boot (a huge glass boot that is chugged out of). While training, they find a lost beer recipe that makes one of the best beers they've ever tasted, and the Germans claim that the rightful owner is theirs and they want it back. Now the games are more than just respect, but also for actual ownership of the recipe.

The first time I viewed this was on DVD, and I immediately started playing quarters with my roommate as soon as it was over and had to skip work the next day because I was hungover. Other than all the cool drinking games, the movie is hilarious. I love everything (even the hit or miss stuff like Club Dread) that Broken Lizard has put out. What is cool is that the movie really does get funnier with each viewing. Not really much to say about the movie since it really just deals around beer, beer games, hot women, hot topless women, and a lot of laughs. On the extras, there is some stuff where the guys are talking about some of their worst drinking moments and the one that involves Kevin Heffernan (Landfill) is hilarious. Talking about how they went to a restaurant and he got annihilated before it was even 2pm and he started puking right at the front door profusely had me cracking up.

If you like beer, women, and some crude humor, then you definitely need to own Beerfest!

P.S. - One time I lost a game of quarters to a girl at this huge house party. I had to bong two pitchers of beer within about 5 minutes of each other. It was not fun. I don't even remember much after that incident except for doing a few shots of something. What I do remember is waking up naked with a Santa Clause hat on in my friend's game room and searching the house for my clothes. I guess I got hot.

While it didn't quite spark a trend in chug-a-lug brew comedies, Beerfest is the kind of zany time-killer that's a lot funnier if you're within reach of a six-pack and Doritos. In other words, this is yet another low-brow laff-a-thon from the Broken Lizard gang (Super Troopers) that's likely to draw a bigger audience on DVD than it did in theaters, especially since there's a lot of duds (and flat suds) to sit through while waiting for the next big beer-belly-laugh. It's the kind of movie that thinks masturbating frogs are funny (OK, you decide), while serving up a gang of guzzling Americans (the aforementioned Broken Lizard troupe, who also write this stuff with director Jay Chandrasekhar) who compete in an epic beer-drinking contest against the nefarious German challenger Baron Wolfgang Von Wolfhausen (played by German actor Jurgen Prochnow, whose starring role in Das Boot inspires one of this movie's better jokes). When it's not trying to top itself in terms of sheer stupidity and juvenile humor, Beerfest satisfies its target audience (basically, frat-rats and party animals) with some gratuitously bare-breasted babes, rampant consumption of alcohol, and the welcomed appearance of Cloris Leachman, who sort-of reprises her "Frau Blucher" persona from Young Frankenstein. So basically what you've got here is a dim-witted but energetic comedy called Beerfest that delivers exactly what you'd expect from a movie with that title.
