DVD Reviews of Batman

DVD Review: Garbage -- Not at all like the original Batman!
Summary: 1 Stars

What an awful movie! This is an insult even to the somewhat silly original Batman TV series. At least the Batman I grew up with was motivated by and expressed noble ideals -- not just revenge, or childhood trauma, or a twisted sense of self-righteousness. And he was always in control of his emotions and knew what to say, unlike this peculiarly neurotic version, who goes from extremes of cool confidence and rationality to wishy-washy sentimentality, to downright bizarre fits of vicious temper.

In this movie, Batman and Bruce Wayne don't even look like they could be the same person. As another reviewer pointed out, Wayne is a rather short, unattractive guy with a personality disorder. (Also, what in the world happened to Robin? You won't even hear about him in this movie.)

The Joker, although well played by Jack Nicholson, is WAY over the top. His pre-Joker persona is a mean guy with a huge ego and certainly amoral, but the similarity ends there. He later behaves with much more perversion and cruelty than the original, so much that I think this movie should have been R-rated. Kids under the age of 16 simply should not see the gory things he does to people for fun.

Speaking of kids, there are many PG-13 movies that are OK to show to 10-year-olds if you can caution them about an occasional bad guy, language or immodesty. Not this movie. Don't even think of showing it to a pre-teen. Not only is there a fair amount of bad language that is unnecessary, and the specter of Batman's sudden descent into a casual sexual relationship (even with a beautiful girl, it's still embarrassing); the violence is egregious, scary, perverse, often nonsensical, and overdone.

The original Batman might well have fallen in love with and kissed a beautiful woman, but he was also a gentleman and would not have slept with her on the very first date (at least not if kids might find out about it) - and then hung from the ceiling for a bit before moving to the sofa during the night - and then walked out on her for a funerary rite! Bizarre and troubling behavior, to say the least.

I am very sorry I bought this DVD, even though it was dirt-cheap. (I am going to be a lot more careful about Amazon reviews from now on.) If you're looking for a good comic-book superhero movie, get "Superman" instead. It's a much better movie, especially for kids.

Description of Batman

After witnessing his parents brutal murder as a child, millionaire-philanthropist Bruce Wayne pledges his life to fighting crime disguised as Batman. His long-time nemesis, The Joker, has sinister plans for the citizens of Gotham City. His greed is matched by his obsession with photojournalist Vicki Vale. But Batman is there to counter the Joker's every move. With the fate of Gotham and Vicki in the balance, will good or evil prevail?
Thanks to the ambitious vision of director Tim Burton, the blockbuster hit of 1989 delivers the goods despite an occasionally spotty script, giving the caped crusader a thorough overhaul in keeping with the crime fighter's evolution in DC Comics. Michael Keaton strikes just the right mood as the brooding "Dark Knight" of Gotham City; Kim Basinger plays Gotham's intrepid reporter Vicki Vale; and Jack Nicholson goes wild as the maniacal and scene-stealing Joker, who plots a takeover of the city with his lethal Smilex gas. Triumphant Oscar-winning production design by the late Anton Furst turns Batman into a visual feast, and Burton brilliantly establishes a darkly mythic approach to Batman's legacy. Danny Elfman's now-classic score propels the action with bold, muscular verve. --Jeff Shannon
